Economist (Corporate) conducts research and analysis on economic data/trends and produces forecasts, interpretive reporting, and media used for risk assessment, communication, and decision making. Collects economic data from established datasets and other sources utilizing data collection and data science protocols. Being an Economist (Corporate) utilizes statistical analysis, mathematical methodologies, and modeling techniques to develop data. Designs and organizes data into unique report models and graphical illustrations to present economic information used for decision making and solution development. Additionally, Economist (Corporate) requires a bachelor's degree in economics or equivalent. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Economist (Corporate) occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Gaining exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. The W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research currently has an opportunity for an
Economist. Economists are responsible for using specialized knowledge and experience to direct
research projects related to the causes and effects of unemployment and measure its alleviation.
Alone or jointly with colleagues as situations dictate, use economic theory and research
methodology to design and conduct research projects as approved by the Vice President and
Director of Research.
Responsibilities include research design, implementation and evaluation based on existing
knowledge and evolving theory. Construct and test methods of data collection and interpret using
observation, interviews, surveys, and secondary data reviews including literature searches.
Analyze and evaluate data and information.
Economists produce academic or policy related research suitable for publication for the Institute,
peer reviewed journals, conference volumes, book chapters, technical reports or other appropriate.
Seek funding from government agencies, nonprofits, and foundations to support research activity.
Present papers and participate in professional meetings and conferences. Provide professional
consulting services to outside professional groups, agencies, governmental units, and businesses
when assigned.
Position Requirements
Position requirements included Ph. D. in labor economics. Experience in addressing policy
relevant issues in labor markets and substantial publications. Demonstrated interest in empirical
research and studying the interaction of labor markets and social insurance systems, such as
unemployment insurance or workers’ compensation. Demonstrated strong quantitative methods
and skills to analyze data. Excellent oral and written communication.
