Sounds True, founded in 1985, is a multimedia publisher specializing in spirituality, holistic living, and transformational learning. We are seeking a full-time Editorial Director to join our team.


    The Editorial Director is the steward of Sounds True’s entire book list and partners with the Publisher and Editorial Team to acquire a list of 25 transformative and high-quality books per year that align with Sounds True’s mission and publishing strategy, including personally acquiring and managing 10-15 of those books. The Editorial Director also manages the editorial team, including the acquisitions editor, developmental editor, and editorial assistant, including being directly responsible for day-to-day mentorship and cultivating a growth path for the future.


    Primary Responsibilities:

    • In partnership with the Publisher, maintaining the focus and profitability of the entire
    • book list
    • In partnership with the Publisher, setting and maintaining strong editorial standards for all titles on the list and mentoring members of the team to meet those standards
    • Personally acquiring and managing 10-15 new book projects annually that meet
    • Publisher’s goals for financial performance and mission-driven content, and providing regular reporting of progress toward acquisitions and editorial goals
    • Advising the team on new acquisitions and list strategy
    • Managing the members of the editorial team, including day-to-day responsibilities and growth and development to meet the overall goals of the team
    • Collaborating with other division leaders (marketing, publicity, production, etc.) to tend to the health and efficacy of the overall publishing program
    • Identifying potential authors, developing proposals, presenting new projects to the acquisitions team, and negotiating offers with authors and literary agents as necessary
    • Managing all processes of book acquisition through publication
    • Providing a stellar partnership and publishing experience to all authors
    • Writing catalog copy, jacket copy, and in-house positioning sales materials for each book acquired
    • Cultivating and managing relationships with authors and literary agents
    • Brainstorming, creating, and composing new project proposals for content and marketability
    • Researching and evaluating industry trends, competitive titles, and professional needs in the designated fields, including conference attendance and travel
    • Representing each book acquired through titling, creative direction, and subsequent editorial phases, including personally performing developmental editing and transmittal tasks for some titles
    • Working closely with production editors and freelancers, as well as editorial assistants, production, marketing and sales, art/design, IT, and contracts to meet acquisitions, development, and publishing goals
    • Other responsibilities as needed.


    Role Authority & Accountability:

    • Manages Acquisitions Editor, Developmental Editor, Editorial Assistant
    • Oversees publishing process for 10-15 adult non-fiction books per year, in collaboration with the publisher and teams in production, design, marketing and publicity, and sales


    Recommended Skills/Qualifications/Job Requirements:

    • Comprehensive knowledge of the psychology, relationships, health, healing, and self-help book marketplace and trends, including awareness of a broad spectrum of topics, such as health and healing, conscious parenting, creativity, spirituality, personal and professional wellness, conscious leadership and business, self-help and personal development
    • Minimum 10 years of relevant editorial experience
    • Established agency contacts
    • Demonstrated business judgment with strong written and oral communication skills, as well as excellent negotiation skills
    • Strong, succinct presentation skills
    • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels across the organization
    • Superior editorial judgment and excellent developmental editing skills
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to work independently and set priorities under pressure
    • Proficient knowledge of MS Office and Google Suite
    • Experience managing and mentoring editorial staff
