Education Specialist - Museum conducts research activities concerned with educational programs and services in a museum. Creates and distributes educational materials and publications for museum visitors and may be responsible for conducting staff training sessions. Museum Intern: Outreach and Education

    This internship position, within the Department of Cultural Services and under the direction of the Museum Services Supervisor, assists with various museum operations to fulfill the Museum's mission of collecting, sharing, and preserving the community history of Louisville, Colorado. This is a great opportunity to work in a small, City-owned museum that enjoys demonstrated community support and public interest. This position facilitates relationships with the community and encourages visitors to “Be a Part of the Story.”
    This internship will provide exposure to the operation and development of a city-owned historical museum, and experience giving tours, leading programs, and developing educational content during the Museum’s busy summer hours. Interns will be trained on tour content and knowledge related to programs and educational content.
     
    Schedule: June 4, 2024 - August 9, 2024 for approximately 10-15 hours per week on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays for a total of 150 hours over 10 weeks. Hours may include Friday evenings during Louisville's First Friday event or other specially scheduled programs.
    The Museum’s hours of operation are:
    Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday 10 am – 3 pm
     Wednesday 1-6 pm 
    • Work with Museum staff and volunteers to proactively greet Museum visitors in a professional and inviting manner and assist them with their needs.
    • Engage visitors in conversation about the Museum, Louisville history, and Louisville activities and give tours of the Museum buildings to diverse audiences that include students, tourists, families, seniors, and researchers.
    • Assist with Museum programming and events and outreach activities to the Louisville community, including presentations to the public, schools, and local organizations.
    • Develop written and visual materials for Museum programs and services.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    • Bachelor's degree or current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in public history or history preferred, experience working in a museum setting preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
    • Education or experience in museums, education, history or relevant field is preferred.
    • Experience with informal education for the public, such as by giving tours or leading programs for a variety of age groups is preferred.
    • Interest in talking with people about history and in gathering and sharing the everyday stories of citizens.
    • Respect and recognition of the need for careful handling of fragile historic objects.
    • Attention to detail and relaying factual historical information.
    • Ability to organize work, set priorities, use time efficiently, and work independently.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to read, speak and hear.  The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands, fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.  The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

    Position includes lifting, bending, reaching, and stooping to move books and other materials.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    The work is performed inside the Museum.  The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate
