    Position Goal:

    The Educational Specialist will consult with instructional staff, parents, and students regarding the provision of appropriate educational services for students with disabilities; facilitates and communicates effectively with staff and parents to create a partnership of support for students; will serve as liaison with medical, mental health, and education communities regarding student needs.

    • Skills in classroom management and organizational techniques

    Essential Job Functions: 

    This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary.  Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:

    • Utilize district adopted curriculum to guide instruction
    • Experience working with 3 to 21 year old students with a variety of disabling conditions and in a variety of settings.
    • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the special education process and the essential requirements of IDEA, WAC 392-172, and State Essential Learning Requirements and Assessment.
    • Demonstrate ability to work cooperatively to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, and staff.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in verbal and written communication skills.
    • Demonstrate the ability to plan and facilitate meetings and committees and provide guidance in the development of IEP’s and transition plans.
    • Effectively administer, interpret, and explain a variety of assessment tools (standardized and curriculum based) in written and verbal formats. Evaluate and observe students; and write clear, concise reports.
    • Demonstrate the ability to collect, interpret, and apply academic and behavioral data within an educational setting.
    • Demonstrate proficiency at providing in-service training for general and special education staff.
    • Maintain professional competence through in-service and professional growth activities.
    • Demonstrate flexibility in response to change.
    • Demonstrate ability to coordinate the implementation of comparable services for transferring students.
    • Possess organizational skills needed to meet program requirements and timelines.
    • Demonstrate the ability to provide consultation and follow-up services to general classroom teachers, parents, and other district personnel as needed to support special and general education staff in assisting and designing effective instructional and behavioral programs for individual students.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of technology as it relates to Special Education students and job management.
    • Demonstrate familiarity with online IEP management programs.
    • Exemplify integrity, good judgment, and a sense of humor.
    • Comply with all district policies and procedures.
    • Comply with the Professional Code of Conduct
    • Perform related duties as assigned

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Valid Washington State Teacher certificate with Special Education endorsement or Educational Staff Associate certificate
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Successful teaching experience preferred
    • Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic, and language diversity preferred
