    Job Description Summary
    The Library Specialist position has primary responsibility for the order and maintenance of the general and special collections at the Museum Library. Consulting with the Head of the Museum Library and coordinating with other library departments such as LIBRA staff, the position evaluates, plans, and implements collections shifts, LIBRA transfers, and other stacks projects.Tasks also include pre- and post-cataloging review of items, serials processing, preparing items for binding or repair, initiating work orders, reviewing inventories and reports, and overseeing reshelving. The position is responsible for hiring, scheduling, and supervising student employees; as student supervisor, the position coordinates with the Head and Library Assistant for training student employees and distributing student employee assistance with a variety of tasks. The position also serves as back up for all critical Access Services tasks and regularly provides assistance to patrons and general library operations.

    Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    Maintain the Museum Library physical collections (general and special collections) in good order and condition. Evaluate, plan, and implement collections shifts, LIBRA transfers, and other collections maintenance projects, including regular shelving.
    Conduct pre- and post-cataloging review of collections items, serials processing, and other tasks related to the care, location, and management of physical items.
    Communicate with other library departments about work orders, treatment of physical items, issues with item locations or status, inventories, ALMA-generated reports, transfers, withdrawals, newly received items, and issues with metadata, item records, or holdings.
    Hire, schedule, and supervise student employees. Work with the Library Assistant, Head, and other library staff to train and deploy student employees on tasks.
    Assist library users and visitors with a variety of questions and issues.
    Serve as back-up for all Access Services functions, including covering the circulation desk, pulling requested materials, scanning, and assisting with AEON requests as necessary.
    Follow general library operating procedures, including opening and closing the library, keeping records, contacting facilities for maintenance requests or LTS for IT repairs, processing items delivered by van or mail, ordering supplies, and enforcing library policies.
    Perform additional duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:
    Required:
    B.A. or equivalent with knowledge of subjects related to Museum Library collections.
    Progressive experience working with library physical collections, including using ALMA reports and planning shifts.
    Supervisory experience, especially with student employees.
    Knowledge of ALMA, Microsoft Office applications, AEON, Springshare, and other tools used for collections management and library operations.
    Ability to conduct searches in library databases, interpret data in library records, and locate items in the shelves using Library of Congress and Dewey call numbers.
    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    Proven ability to work independently and collegially with colleagues and the public

    Preferred:
    Experience handling and working with special collections materials.
    Reading knowledge of a language other than English that is represented in the Museum Library's physical holdings.
