    The Lionel Cantu Gay Lesbian Bi Trans Intersex Resource Center (Cantu Queer Center) exists to provide an open, safe, inclusive, intercultural space, promoting education about all genders and sexualities, and empowering self-exploration of these identities. The Cantu Queer Center supports same-gender-loving students, faculty, staff, and alumni, as well as families, friends, and the entire campus community. The CQC serves as a resource to LGBTQIA2S (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, two-spirit, plus other sexual and gender identities) students by providing opportunities for leadership and personal development, and by creating programs and services that work to eliminate heterosexism, bi-phobia, and gender-identity oppression. The Cantu Queer Center strives to develop an atmosphere of acceptance and well-being from which the campus community can fulfill the academic mission of the university.

    JOB SUMMARY

    Under the general supervision of the Cantu Queer Center Director, the Trans Education Specialist serves as the nexus of support for Trans-identified students and the integration of education and awareness for the stakeholders and campus community. Major functional areas of responsibility include coordination of training and education for the campus community, program and event planning, case management, student advocacy, and policy development. The Trans Education Specialist works closely with various divisions/units to identify and intervene as early as possible with trans students whose behavior suggests the need for support services. The incumbent is readily accessible to faculty, staff, and students and will also support the activities, programs, and services associated with the functions of the Resource Centers.

    APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

    Budgeted Salary: $56,700 - $66,900 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
    Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

    JOB DUTIES

    30% - Student Advocacy/Case-Management
    • Responsible for the advocacy, support, and mentorship of Transgender, Genderqueer, Gender Non-Binary, and Gender Nonconforming students and groups.
    • Assist students one-on-one with navigating different aspects of gender transition such as coming out, name change process, etc. Refer students to appropriate campus and community resources, including but not limited to physical and mental health, wellness, and legal counsel.
    • Promote critical dialogue and develop strategies to promote social and institutional change of campus climate around issues of gender equity and inclusion. Communicate with University, student, and local press as needed.
    • Advocate with and for gender-expansive student inclusion and support with various campus partners and offices.
    • Serve on campus committees at the discretion of the Cantu Queer Center Director and Resource Center Directors.

    30% - Program Planning
    • Collaborate with Cantu Queer Center team, the Resource Centers, and other offices and partners on programs and activities to inspire awareness and advocacy addressing the unique barriers/concerns specific to Trans, Genderqueer, Gender Nonconforming, and Gender Non-binary students, faculty, and staff.
      Prepare and manage program/project budgets, complete fiscal transactions and forms, prepares Purchase Orders, and other operational tasks as needed, in accordance to university policies.
    • Coordinate in bringing experts in the field of Queer and Trans identities and be a conduit for a network of trans/gender experts to inform/provide specialized training.
      Develop, evaluate, and implement long-range unit and divisional goals in partnership with the Cantu Queer Center Director, Cantu Center Program Coordinator, and other Resource Centers.
    • Coordinate the participation in local and national trans-centered/inclusive conferences, educational activities, community-building programs, and events such as the Trans Asterisk* Conference, Nor Cal T Camp, etc.
    • Serve as lead organizer and campus host for the annual NorCal T-Camp experience
    • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate the performance of Cantu Center student interns and volunteers, related to their program or projects, particularly those focused on trans and nonbinary student programs and services.
    • Develop, implement, and maintain leadership development opportunities for student staff, RC interns, and the wider community including as Student Leadership Institute that develops student leadership training and skills.

    25% - Education
    • Educate the campus community on issues that are facing Transgender, Genderqueer and Gender Non-binary students, staff, and faculty.
    • Coordinate the development and implementation of training/workshops to build and expand greater awareness of gender issues including but not limited to the Diversity and Inclusion
    • Certificate Program, CHES, Bias Incident Responses, etc.
    • Develop educational materials/infographics for the Cantu Center website and social media.

    15% - Policy Development / Documentation
    • Advise and consult various campus partners including but not limited to the Health Center, CAPS, Career Center, SOAR, CARE office, the Gender Inclusive Facilities Work Group, and others on projects, policies, documentation, and best practice strategies for Trans, Genderqueer, Gender Nonconforming and Gender Non-binary students, faculty and staff.
    • Maintain knowledge of current national and international research and best practices around Health care access and treatment, Mental Health, Social/Academic publications, and legal processes.
    • Prepare, maintain, and analyze reports, files, and reference materials.
    • Maintain a commitment to recruitment and management efforts that will support the achievement of campus diversity goals, especially pertaining to Queer and Trans students of color, low-income and first-generation students.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
    • Knowledge and understanding of Trans, Genderqueer, Gender Nonconforming and Gender Non-binary student experience in higher education, as well as knowledge of broader diversity in higher education and the ability to address these issues through co-curricular programs and activities
    • Experience in creating, implementing, and publicizing diverse, successful programs.
    • Excellent cultural competency skills to be able to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
    • Demonstrated work and knowledge of trans communities, including, but not limited to communities of color, low income, economically disadvantaged.
    • Ability to produce detailed reports and documents; ability to analyze data, present findings, and suggest resolutions.
    • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques such as trauma informed care, queer theory, and other resilience-based frameworks.
    • Demonstrated experience with college students in program leadership and professional development.
    • Demonstrated experience in the following areas: recruitment, retention, or academic advising at the university level.
    • Excellent initiative, organization, attention to detail, resourcefulness and creative problem-solving.
    • Excellent interpersonal communications skills (e.g. the ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, sensitivity in interacting with students, staff, & faculty and handling sensitive issues).
    • Ability to learn policies and procedures from both verbal and written sources; ability to apply and explain office policies and procedures with consistency.
    • Knowledge and experience using standard office computer applications such as Google Email and Calendars, Word, Excel, database software.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Master's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
    • Knowledge of campus departments, clubs and organizations.
    • Feminist/Queer/LGBTQ Studies Certificate.
    • Diversity Studies Certificate.
    • Mental Health First Aid.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.

    • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
