    These positions are temporary and may not exceed 1039 hours (six months) in a service year. They may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.

    Positions may not be filled at every duty station.

    Selectees may be moved between duty stations within park boundaries.

    The parks and duty stations hiring for these positions are below. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is April/May through September/October. These months vary due to weather conditions, project needs and/or funding.

    • Denali National Park and Preserve: Denali Park, AK (May - September).
    • Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve: Bartlett Cove, AK (April - October)
    • Kenai Fjords National Park: Seward, AK (May - September)
    • Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park: Skagway, AK (April - October)
    • Lake Clark National Park and Preserve: Port Alsworth, AK (May - October)
    • Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve: Copper Center & McCarthy, AK (May - September). Applicants that apply to and are selected for McCarthy will be duty stationed at Kennecott, AK.
    • Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve & Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve: Bettles, Eagle and Circle Hot Springs, AK (May - October). Applicants that apply to and are selected for Circle Hot Springs will be duty stationed at Coal Creek Camp, AK.
    Work includes, but is not limited to the following:
    • Operating light duty motor vehicles such as pickup trucks, sedans, flatbed trucks, etc. up to 10,000 pounds to transport personnel, supplies, materials, equipment and tools throughout the park.
    • Maintaining buildings, grounds, road, and trails by operating heavy power equipment and hand tools such as lawn mowers, portable snow blowers, shovels, rakes, lawn edging equipment, tar pots, culvert steamers, brush chippers, power compactors, power saws, chainsaws, rock bars, picks, axes, crosscut saws, single-jack hammers, etc. Cleaning and maintaining equipment. Performing janitorial duties for buildings.
    • Loading and unloading supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies. Moving heavy items using wheelbarrows and hand trucks.
    • Moving furniture; removing and setting signs; painting picnic tables and signs; raking and watering lawns; trimming trees and shrubbery; picking up litter; cleaning fire pits, etc.
    • Digging ditches and trenches with picks and shovels where soil is hard and compact and must be graded or sloped. Breaking up pavement, soil or concrete; mixing and pouring concrete, asphalt, and hot/cold mix; filling and leveling holes in damaged roads.
    • Cutting heavy trees with an ax or chain saw, stacking heavy logs, lumber, and sacks of cement.
    In addition, WG-05 positions operate vehicles over Federal, state, and country roads and city streets in all traffic conditions following applicable speeds.

    Physical Demands: The work performed requires the exertion of moderate to very heavy physical effort. The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance.

    Working Conditions: Outside work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions. Indoor work is often accomplished in office buildings or in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas such as warehouses, loading docks, or trade shops. Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust, and dirt and the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes. Work requires the employee to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards in the work area.

    Government housing is available at Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve & Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. It may be available at Denali National Park and Preserve, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, Lake Clark National Park and Preserve and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. It is not available at Kenai Fjords National Park.

    Conditions of Employment

    • U.S. Citizenship required.
    • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
    • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
    • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
    • For Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve & Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, this position is subject to drug testing based on the collateral duty requiring firearms in the back-country or other locations for non-law enforcement reasons such as protection from animals. Selectees for this park will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment and will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
    • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
    • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
    • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
    • Special Requirements for Kennecott/McCarthy duty station: Employees must pass a pulmonary respiratory resistance test to determine the physical ability to perform the work. All employees on site are subject to an initial medical examination and periodic blood tests as required by OSHA 29 CFR 1926.62 (at government expense). Lead is known to be present in the Kennecott area, primarily in the form of paint dust. As determined through air monitoring, respirators may be required and worn in compliance with, 29 CFR 1910.134, which requires a good face seal. Presence of facial hair, glasses, etc. are prohibited if it cannot be proven that such conditions do not prevent that requirement.
    • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
    • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 15 nights per month.
    • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

    Alaska currently does not have a state income tax. Salary subject to annual review and adjustment.

    The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position may be suitable for situational telework only during an emergency or natural disaster with prior supervisory approval.

    Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

    If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1039 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

    The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1039 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1039 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

    Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

    A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Federal employee who is transferring to the National Park Service from another component, bureau or Federal agency and who does not meet the conditions under 5 CFR 575.102 is not eligible for a recruitment incentive.

    A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.
