  • Duties

    As an Engineering Technician (Electrical) you will:

    • Act as an authoritative source of technical expertise in the design and integration of stations and control systems during the development of the engineering packages.
    • Independently create, develop, review, and evaluate engineering requirements documents for complex projects for compatibility, conformance to project requirements, good engineering practices and standards.
    • Consult and collaborate with engineering staff and other personnel to: review, discuss and interpret design concepts; define and/or recommend requirements of detailed working drawings; and, provide technical input and recommendations to resolve problems.
    • Develop and review electric power distribution and utilization systems designs and specifications.
    • Interact with professional and technical staff to collect data and information to support project design work and to apply during construction and installation problems or issues.
    • Develop CAD standards and guidelines for design drawings, including unique or prototype equipment.
    • Develop, review, and/or maintain substation engineering design standards/templates, substation engineering policies, high voltage substation equipment specifications and criteria.
    • Act as the primary point of contact for vendor (supplier) documents, drawings, or reports.
    • Maintain liaison with contractors, manufacturers and their representatives regarding specifications in materials, equipment design, and innovations and recommends their acceptance or rejection.

    Qualifications

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level [GS-11] in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as: experience in 1) developing electrical utility drawings using Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software; 2) assisting in developing electrical utility engineering standards, specifications, policies, and guides for CADD to support projects and 3) providing technical guidance to engineers, other technicians, and contractors.

    "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary. Some work may require periods of walking, standing, bending, climbing, or driving a motor vehicle in activities such as inspections of installed equipment and visits to construction sites and industrial, commercial, agricultural, and other business establishments. Employees may carry light items such as books, instruments, and other similar materials. The work does not require any special physical effort.

    Work Environment: The work is usually performed in field settings. The work area normally involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring safety precautions typical of power substations. Up to 100% travel may be required.
