Supervises and/or participates in the installation, maintenance, and repair of all electrical wiring, apparatus, luminaires, motors, industrial instruments, and other equipment under the jurisdiction of the City of Flint Utilities; performs related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the supervision of an employee of higher level who makes assignments and checks work for conformance with desired result and established standards.Supervises and participates in the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of wiring systems, electric motors, transformers, wiring, conduits and raceways, luminaries, electrical control devices, meters, electrical timing control, programmable logic controllers, and electrically operated devices ranging from 24VDC to 4160 VAC.
Supervises and participates in installing electrical support structures, including lighting poles, boxes, and conduits.
Strings cables and wires. Installs, splices and repairs all kinds of wiring, including underground and overhead.
Installs and maintains motors, meters, and generators, dresses and polishes commutators, seats and replaces brushes, performs complex conduit bending and raceway system installations, performs other electrical and mechanical work as needed.
Install, inspects, repairs and maintains all metering controls, recorders, magnetic flow meters and other similar instrumentation and laboratory equipment in conjunction with Utilities Instrumentation Technicians.
Troubleshoots, identifies and makes emergency repairs and adjustments on electrical equipment and wiring systems. Makes emergency repairs to boilers and all condensate return tanks. Locates and clears short circuits.
Cleans, maintains, installs and repairs battery systems and emergency electrical generator systems; Cleans, maintains, installs and repairs low voltage and medium voltage electrical distribution equipment, motor control centers and variable frequency drives ranging from 24VDC to 4160 VAC and 46K VAC. Operates medium voltage utility switching.
Maintains stock of electrical fittings, wire, conduit, equipment and appurtenances as required.
Utilizes computer-based work order system to document work performed and to create work orders. Follows written and oral instructions from supervisor.
May be required to draw diagrams/schematics of work performed.
Employee may be called to respond to emergencies after hours.
1) At least four years of practical experience in industrial or commercial electrical construction or maintenance OR At least four years of combined practical experience and training in industrial or commercial electrical construction or maintenance at a registered trade or technical school. (The combination MUST include at least two years of practical experience.)
2) Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools and equipment of the trade.
3) Considerable knowledge of the hazards and precautionary measures peculiar to the trade. Knowledge of lockout-tagout and arc-flash protection is required.
4) Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code/NFPA 70.
5) Ability to work from drawings and specifications and to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
6) Considerable Skill in the use and operation of the tools and equipment of the trade.
7) Skill in locating and repairing defects in electrical systems and equipment.
8) Ability to meet or exceed the physical, mental and visual standards of the position.
9) Ability and willingness to work in a manner that will not endanger the safety of oneself, other persons, and equipment.
10) Ability to coordinate and work closely with other City employees and contractors across multiple cost centers. Ability to coordinate and work closely with Utility companies and other entities. Ability to respectfully interface with the citizens of Flint and the public.
