    The Role

    This position will serve as the senior technical advisor, reporting to the Manager, of a department responsible for machinery within an A1B Propulsion Plant, knowledge of both mechanical and electrical engineering principles and applications. Machinery within the department includes turbines, generators, diesel engines, pumps, heat exchangers, motor and valve controllers, and fluid systems in support of the machinery and the plant. The department is cognizant over the design requirements of the machinery, support of the manufacturer's build and test of the machinery, shipboard troubleshooting and support of the installed equipment aboard a Naval Platform, and lifecycle management of the machinery.

    The position will include support of training initiatives, review of engineering proposals, review of engineering troubleshooting recommendations, and will serve as the technical backstop, with the Manager, of all technical work within the department. Travel to vendor facilities will be offered but not required, support of shipboard machinery will be offered but not required, and some remote work opportunities will be offered but not required.

    Applies electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems.

    Must Have

    Bachelor's Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience

    Master's Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience

    Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.

    Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

    Nice to Have

    • Experience with military specifications and standards.
    • Experience using and developing technical manuals.
    • Experience with environmental qualifications (e.g., shock, vibration, electromagnetic interference).
    • Experience with technical writing and written, developed proposals and calculations.
    • Experience as a trainer/teacher with a focus on continuing education.
