Being an Elevator Inspector requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. May be required to be certified in an area of specialty with 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Additionally, Elevator Inspector is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.     • Assist in the management of the operation and maintenance of elevator and escalator machinery and related conveyance equipment throughout NJ TRANSIT Rail System, including installation, maintenance, and state of good repair to verify compliance with applicable building and safety codes.
    • Assist supervision in management of multiple contracts providing for maintenance and repair of all assigned units in accordance with industry standards and NJ TRANSIT policy.
    • Provide QA/QC oversight of plans, specifications, and field work by contractors and in-house forces. Work to develop and improve standard operating procedures and replacement programs.
    • Investigate concerns of code violations and reinvestigate to verify corrective actions.
    • Interpret and explain rules, regulations, ordinances, and safety standards to NJ TRANSIT management. Prepare reports and make presentations as needed.
    • Prepare and maintain accurate records and inspection reports. Develop program to provide for regular improvements including new installations and/or overall work.
    • Follow prescribed NJ TRANSIT and industry-wide standards in fulfilling job requirements.


    Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

    Minimum:

    • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university in mechanical or industrial engineering.
    • 3 years experience directly related to the installation, repair, or maintenance of elevators and escalators.
    • Must meet the definition of ‘Elevator Personnel’ in ASME A17.1/CSA B44, Section 1, 3, and have documented training and at least 3 years performing inspections and performing or witnessing tests specified in ASME A17.


    Knowledge and Skills:

    Essential:

    • QEI Certification and knowledge of New Jersey State Building Codes, Uniform Building Codes, as well as New Jersey and national codes for elevators and escalators is required.
    • Familiarity with different brands of elevators and escalators including all major brands is required.

    Preferred:

    • Professional Engineer’s License in the State of New Jersey desired.
