Emergency Dispatcher is responsible for responding to calls for emergency and non-emergency assistance and dispatching law enforcement, fire fighting, or rescue units. Transmits and receives coded and conventional messages. Being an Emergency Dispatcher differentiates between routine, priority, and emergency messages, and initiates or follows through on responses as required. Communicates details of situation and location. Additionally, Emergency Dispatcher enters unit response details into a database. Requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Emergency Dispatcher works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job.     This position operates Central Monitoring to facilitate routine communications; physician answering services; emergency communications, to include medical codes, intra-hospital disaster codes, and external disaster communication; security dispatching; and building automation.  Additionally, Dispatchers receive and process emergency 911 telephone calls from the community.  Processing includes providing emergency medical dispatch instructions to the caller via the telephone, dispatching appropriate ambulance, and emergency vehicle resource coordination. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Job Requirements

    • High school diploma or its equivalent. 
    • Successful completion of the emergency medical dispatch course within three (3) months of start date.
    • Must maintain and renew EMD certification every 2 years after obtained.

    • Excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, providers and other hospital personnel on a one-to-one basis using appropriate grammar, vocabulary and word usage.
    • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
    • Excellent time management, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to problem solve, multi-task in a fast-paced setting and work well in a team environment.
    • Competent operation of law enforcement databases and computer programs. 
    • Competent operation of electronic incident report writing software.
    • Competent operation of a complex IP based campus wide surveillance camera system. 
    • Competent operation of  ProQA dispatch software and CAD system
    • Use of various security alarm systems and access control systems.
    • Excellent customer service skills.
    • High degree of accuracy with concentration and close attention to detail.
    • Ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties. 
    • Ability to work efficiently for long periods of time without direct supervision.

    Working Conditions

    • Typical office environment with prolonged sitting. 
    • Work subject to interruptions and frequent high stress levels.   
    • Ability to work occasional extended hours,  evenings, holidays and/or weekends based on the needs of the department. 
    • Will receive several auditory and visual alarms at one time.
    • Works with protected health information

    • Use of personal computer and other standard office equipment including but not limited to: telephone, fax, copier, calculator, and scanners. 
    • Repetitive wrist, finger and hand movement. 
    • Occasional manipulation of large volumes of books, charts, reports or files.   May lift  supplies or equipment up.
    • Lifting, pushing, pulling, walking sitting, reaching, bending, kneeling or stooping to perform duties in a safe manner.
