  • The Trenton Police Department is currently accepting applications for a Full-Time Emergency Services Dispatcher or ESD. Trenton, Ohio, is a unique city that has managed to steadily grow yet still maintain that small-town feel.     We expect that the hiring process will take approximately ninety (90) days from application to start date. The process will include an interview session conducted by a community or police administrative panel or both, a comprehensive background investigation and records check, a polygraph examination, a psychological evaluation, a full medical exam, and comprehensive drug testing. Each testing element will be scored or evaluated as pass/fail. The current salary range for an Emergency Services Dispatcher is $51,937 - $62,004 annually, with the top-out salary being $65,998 in January of 2025

    General Description

    This is a highly responsible and at times stressful position that responds to requests from the public for police, fire, and EMS services, and also from other law enforcement, fire, and EMS entities requesting assistance from the City of Trenton. Requests may be received via telephone or radio, or in person. Emergency Services Dispatchers (ESDs) perform under the general direction and supervision of the Chief of Police and a Police Sergeant who is assigned to the ancillary position of Communications Supervisor, but are also responsible to the Lieutenant/Operations Commander and all Police Sergeants; however, extensive leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative due to both design and necessity. The nature of the work performed by the staff of the Communications Center requires that all ESDs establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with representatives of other public safety and law enforcement agencies, local business and industry representatives, other City staff, and the general public. This position requires that the ESDs perform and conduct themselves both on- and off-duty in a manner that does not damage or endanger the loss of trust with the public, their coworkers, and other public safety entities.

    Job Duties

    • Serves as first point of contact for citizens entering the police station.
    • Receives and transmits radio communications, e.g., dispatches police, fire, and life squad units to the geographic location of a request for service, dispatches the proper number of units and equipment, and coordinates backup support with other jurisdictions.
    • Receives emergency and non-emergency requests from service agencies and the public and obtains and records pertinent information.
    • Maintains records on various forms and logs and in various manners, to computer entries and hard copies.
    • Operates various office-type equipment, both generally and specifically related to the ESD position.
    • Receives and verifies vehicle license and registration information.
    • Performs queries, enters, clears, and cancels entries in multiple local, state, and national

    databases and report management systems.

    • Prepares and maintains all LEADS/NCIC correspondence, entries, deletions, warrant transactions (certifications), and training sessions.
    • Receives and disseminates information to other agencies.
    • Receives and accurately processes monies for bonds, impounds, and public records as

    necessary.

    • Maintains visual observation of persons in the department’s holding cell, completes related reports as required, and downloads videos to case files as required.
    • Notarizes forms and documents as necessary.
    • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
    • Performs other related work as required and/or as assigned by a supervisor.

    Essential Skills, Knowledge, Abilities

    • Ability to work independently and be solely responsible for the dispatching function while on duty.
    • Ability to coordinate and perform multiple tasks with accuracy and speed under pressure and in, at times, life-and-death situations.
    • This position requires prior knowledge of or the ability to learn:

    º FCC rules and regulations;

    º Local RMS, LEADS/NCIC computer operations;

    º Public safety radio dispatching procedures;

    º 911 terminal operating procedures;

    º Police department policies and procedures;

    º General safety practices and procedures;

    º Public relations;

    º Records management; and

    º Program tasks, equipment, material, and procedures.

    • This position requires prior skill in or the ability to learn the operation of:

    º Multi-band base radio;

    º LEADS computer terminal;

    º Windows-based computer system;

    º Police department reporting system;

    º City audio and video recording systems;

    º City telephones system; and

    º Various office equipment, e.g., copier, fax.

    • Demonstrated ability to speak clearly and effectively.
    • Ability to communicate well with others both orally and in writing.
    • Good general intelligence and emotional stability.
    • Willingness and ability to interact and cooperate with administrators, police officers, fire and

    EMS staff, and the general public.

    • Ability to operate a Windows-based computer system using standard word processing, spreadsheets, and email.
    • Ability to use the internet for applications appropriate to assigned duties, e.g.,

    maps.

    • Ability to troubleshoot reported problems and resolve them in a quick, efficient, and safe

    manner.

    • Ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly

    changing information.

    • Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
    • Must be able to continually pass random drug and alcohol testing.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • 18 years of age or older
    • Citizen of the United States
    • High school GED or diploma or equivalent
    • Valid driver’s license or State ID
    • LEADS and CCH certification must be obtained within the first three (3) months
    • State of Ohio Notary must be obtained during the first six (6) months
    • Demonstrated ability to speak clearly and effectively
    • Basic computer literacy
    • Must meet such medical standards as prescribed and successfully pass any qualifying

    examinations, either oral or written

    • Must pass an in-depth background investigation and be free of any felony convictions

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Previous coursework and/or work experience as a Police/Fire/EMS or 911 dispatcher or training and work experience evidencing a basic knowledge of emergency dispatching.

    Physical/Mental Abilities and Work Environment

    Work is performed solely in a normal, climate-controlled, office-type environment with the opportunity to sit and stand as needed. Requires 24/7 scheduling availability – may require work in excess of 40 hours as necessary.

    • Occasionally: Bending over, walking, and reaching overhead.
    • Frequently: Repetitive hand motions, grasping, holding, color distinction, sustained attention and concentration, and learning new tasks.
