General Description
This is a highly responsible and at times stressful position that responds to requests from the public for police, fire, and EMS services, and also from other law enforcement, fire, and EMS entities requesting assistance from the City of Trenton. Requests may be received via telephone or radio, or in person. Emergency Services Dispatchers (ESDs) perform under the general direction and supervision of the Chief of Police and a Police Sergeant who is assigned to the ancillary position of Communications Supervisor, but are also responsible to the Lieutenant/Operations Commander and all Police Sergeants; however, extensive leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative due to both design and necessity. The nature of the work performed by the staff of the Communications Center requires that all ESDs establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with representatives of other public safety and law enforcement agencies, local business and industry representatives, other City staff, and the general public. This position requires that the ESDs perform and conduct themselves both on- and off-duty in a manner that does not damage or endanger the loss of trust with the public, their coworkers, and other public safety entities.
