  • With resource and administrative consultation, the Clinical Director works independently with in-depth knowledge and skill of the specialty area to assume 24-hour responsibility for selected populations of patients and personnel. The Clinical Director provides leadership for staff members and has management and instructional responsibilities for maintaining quality nursing practices and skills as well as for supervising the employees on the units. Emphasis at this level is placed on facilitating problem solving through independent action, creativity, direction, evaluation, and teaching of staff.

    • Updates and specifies the nursing personnel needed to give care to changing patient populations taking into account patient acuity, volumes, and staff competencies.
    • Plans, initiates, evaluates and communicates needed changes to improve patient care through conscious, deliberate, and collaborative effort.
    • Works with physicians to develop and implement new and/or long range patient care programs and resolve interdepartmental patient care problems/concerns.
    • Ensures that needed improvements in patient care delivery systems occurs.
    • Participates in development, implementation, and evaluation of Standardized Nursing Procedures for clinical areas for which responsible.
    • Ensures development of written criteria and objectives for teaching of specific patient populations for which responsible.

    • Develops all nursing personnel through the Nurse Manager: Orients to and assists in development into role functions.
    • Selects, promotes, disciplines, and terminates nursing staff through the Nurse Manager.
    • Receives and resolves staff grievances.
    • Develops budgets for patient care, staff teaching programs and capital equipment for submission through appropriate channels.
    • Manages nursing units within approved budgets.
    • Assists nursing personnel to understand the economic factors involved in patient care delivery.
    • Performs long range planning for nursing care delivery taking into consideration the rapidly changing health care system.
    • Plans, implements, and evaluates new programs/projects.
