JOB SUMMARY: Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Communications, Marketing and Development is responsible for the strategic direction and support of Summit’s mission and values through the development of an effective communications plan that strengthens Summit’s brand awareness and is also responsible for strategies that promote engagement, internally and externally through various fundraising initiatives. This includes major gifts, corporate/foundation support, donor relations, and the cultivation and stewardship of current and prospective benefactors. This individual will develop and manage an effective communication plan for Summit that builds on awareness and promotes a positive image with internal and external audiences. Serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, as a primary staff member to the Foundation Board, supervises annual giving, grant proposals, major planned giving, donor records, and special events. The candidate will be expected to set strategy for an overall communications plan – both internally and externally - and fundraising plan for both short- and long-term success.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of Communications, Marketing and Development must be able to perform all essential functions of the position including consistently and successfully:
1. Work closely with the CEO to advance the mission of Summit through effective communication, fundraising, and community outreach.
2. Develop, articulate, and implement a comprehensive and cohesive strategic plan for the Communications, Marketing and Development Department that will engage key stakeholders and the broader community in support of Summit’s mission.
3. Serve as the primary staff member on The Foundation Board and develop a working relationship with the members to elevate Summit’s fundraising initiatives.
4. Direct and supervise the activities of the Communications, Marketing and Development team to execute a dynamic and multi-faceted plan which includes elements of fundraising, marketing/communications, and public affairs.
5. Develop and execute a targeted marketing strategy (including advertising, public relations, digital media) that promotes the agency’s programs and services as well as fundraising priorities to key stakeholders.
6. Prepare annual budgets for the Communications, Marketing and Development department.
7. Develop an annual communications calendar.
8. With an understanding of agency priorities, maintains an annual calendar of grant opportunities and writes all grant applications and progress reports.
9. Prepares internal and external agency communications.
10. Updates agency brochures and other printed materials as appropriate.
11. Maintains media relations and writes agency press releases.
12. Review and edit monthly newsletter, direct mail letters, thank you templates and other communication pieces.
13. Prepares annual report.
14. Provides writing and copyediting support to executive leadership.
15. Prepares scripts/talking points for speaking engagements.
16. Develops and executes plan to promote the Anderson endowment.
17. Develop and implement a planned giving program.
18. Manage, motivate, and mentor members of the Marketing and Development team to work to the highest professional standards, serve as models of Summit’s shared Values, and as ambassadors for Summit both internally and externally.
19. Prepare regular reports for the CEO and Foundation Board on department activities and revenue.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of position skill and/or ability required.
· EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE – Bachelor’s degree with demonstrated experience and proven results in development, marketing, and public relations and communications (e.g., annual and capital campaigns, planned giving, donor cultivation); 7-10 years’ experience including fundraising, community engagement, corporate giving and/or estate planning, public relations, marketing, communications; major gift solicitation experience and/or significant fundraising experience; experience supervising a team of professionals.
· CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Etc.– Fundraising credentials, such as the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CRFE) preferred.
· COMMUNICATION SKILLS – Displays the ability to convey information to another effectively and efficiently. Displays good verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills to help facilitate meaningful sharing of information between people within the organization as well as outside of the organization when necessary. Demonstrates excellent customer service skills to all stakeholders. Stakeholders include but are not limited to, individuals served, peers, supervisors, and external contacts.
· OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES – Ability to receive and follow instructions. Ability to identify and solve problems by acting decisively and showing good judgment. Ability to gather information needed to understand a situation to take timely and appropriate action. Ability to know when to involve others during the decision-making process. Ability to maintain emotional control and composure when faced with urgent or difficult decisions.
