Job Overview:
The Marketing Specialist is responsible for planning, development and
implementation of Sankofa CDC’s brand and marketing strategy, communications,
and public relations activities, both external and internal. This position creates,
integrates, and executes marketing and communications strategies across
multiple organizational channels. The Marketing Specialist ties all marketing
activity back to organizational goals while focusing on the big picture. This position
serves as a key brand communicator to community members, partners,
stakeholders, and other external relationships. This position helps create and
manage marketing campaigns and serves as the chief translator, story-teller,
navigator, and communications coach to the overall team.
As a member of the management and leadership team, the Marketing Specialist
will work with the CEO on organization-wide strategic planning, evaluation,
analysis and professional development initiatives. The position reports to the CEO.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Marketing Strategy & Administrative Management
Leads development of the Sankofa CDC 3-year overarching marketing and
communication plans ensuring adherence to brand goals
Responsible for the achievement of the goals and objectives of the Sankofa
CDC Marketing and Communications Plan
Externally amplifies Sankofa CDC news and initiatives related to the business
with partners and stakeholders
Ensures that evaluation systems are in place related to these goals and
objectives and reports progress to the CEO
Works closely with program staff to design, develop, and implement
communications strategies and effective messaging for organizational and
project-specific goals.
Ensures that brand identity, messaging, marketing and communications
strategy are effectively communicated throughout programming,
development, network support, etc.
Ability to amplify messaging, news and initiatives in partnership with
external stakeholders
Works with the CEO and Finance Director to develop annual budgets for
marketing & communications, and monitor progress, assure adherence and
performance evaluation.
Works with team members to ensure communications are culturally
competent and concurrently reach myriad audiences.
Manages partnerships that support organizational marketing and
fundraising goals.
Supports Community Action Advisory Board (CAAB) communication and
activities.
Assists Development staff with fundraising campaign appeals and events.
Manages interns and research fellows, as necessary.
Must be passionate about contributing to an organization focused on
community development
Brand Management
Develops, implements, and evaluates brand positioning including brand
guides, etc.
Ability to guide produce digital content that tells a poignant brand story
Manages vendors, coordinates logistics and prepares content for brand
meetings and events
Develops, implements, and evaluates marketing campaigns related to
programs, special events, and donor cultivation.
Ideal candidate works well in a fast-paced environment, has strong writing
skills and ability to capture the brand voice, has had direct experience
supporting executive leadership, and can provide strategic guidance to
cross-functional teams.
Content Strategy and Management
Leads the strategy, story-telling and creation of engaging digital content for
Sankofa CDC’s website, social media, and other communication
channels
Coordinates logistics, creates and prepares digital content
Acquainted with analytics tools and reporting measurable action.
Develops, designs, distributes, and maintains high-quality print and
electronic content and collateral including, but not limited to annual reports,
brochures, presentations, newsletters, and fliers.
Creates, with or without a graphic designer, social media, limited print and
digital content, and e-blasts
Press and Public Relations
Identifies and monitors trends, current events, and influencers to anticipate
opportunities for Sankofa CDC to engage in and/or lead the national
conversation on sustainable urban regeneration.
Created and guides media relations strategy, including messaging, press
releases, talking points, creation of press kits and materials, interview
preparation, and responses to media requests.
Develops close partnerships with members of the media.
Ability to represent the organization at public events, meetings, etc. as
needed, including media appearances
Qualifications:
At least five years of professional experience, including leading the
communications, marketing, branding, digital content, and/or public
relations activities of a high-growth organization
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and work-
related experience required in Business or Communications (e.g. marketing,
business administration, management, advertising, journalism, and/or
communications, or similar), advanced degree preferred
Demonstrated knowledge, skills, ability and experience in the successful
development and execution of marketing campaigns, branding,
communications and public relations activities
Strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational and personal skills
Ability and experience successfully managing multiple projects
Experience developing, implementing and managing design/production of
successful digital content, print collateral, websites, newsletters/blog, and
other audience-facing communications vehicles.
Strong experience in digital content development
Proven track record in developing a broad spectrum of proactive media
relations campaigns and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to
diverse audiences
Commitment to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional
teams
Ability to manage vendors and contractors
Excellent oral and written communication skills and copy-editing in all
mediums
Excellent people skills with experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary,
diverse, and dynamic team
Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities, proposing new ways of
creating efficiencies, and guiding investment in people and systems
Flexible and a self-starter; able to manage multiple concurrent projects
while also being highly detail-oriented with attention to quality and
deadlines
Media relations and/or agency experience a plus
Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to Sankofa
CDC’s mission
Computer literacy in Microsoft Office Suite; Google Suite and Canva required
Familiarity with SEO, marketing automation, and 508 compliance helpful
Campaign management software i.e. Every Action, MailChimp and/or other
CRM experience preferred
