Position: Public Works Maintenance / Equipment Operator
Accountable To: Mayor
Nature of Work: The position performs technical and labor duties requiring sometimes strenuous physical work in extreme temperatures, confined spaces, or adverse weather conditions. Position is on call for emergency situations. Hazards include dangers of cave-in; working with loud noises, in traffic, dust, chemicals, gases, sewage, and moving parts or equipment. Requires adherence to safety procedures.
Personal Contacts: Frequent contact with the public; daily contact with public employees as much of the work is a team effort.
Supervision Received: Daily, or as needed, supervision from the Mayor.
Essential Functions: Position requires ability to communicate; operate and maintain equipment; dig; lift heavy objects; visually inspect sites; use hand tools; weld; do carpentry; climb a ladder; walk long distances on uneven ground; and maintain records.
Response Time: Any Town of Geraldine employee must be able to report to work with no more than ten (10) minutes travel time from home.
Areas of Job Accountability and Performance:
Provide for safe drinking water system repair and maintenance; installs and repairs lines. Daily water quality testing.
Does sewer system repairs and maintenance; connects lines; cleans lines.
Assists with maintenance of parks and town grounds;
Operate heavy equipment including motor grader, backhoes, roller, dump trucks, sweeper, etc.
Operate air compressor and jack hammer; uses hand tools. Breaks concrete and asphalt; hauls materials, digs trenches, plows snow, maintains and builds roads; cleans streets; sprinkles dirt; removes dirt from streets.
Read and accurately records meter readings; installs and repairs meters as needed.
Works in shop as needed. Orders parts as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
Job Requirements:
Knowledge: This position requires a basic knowledge of operation and maintenance of heavy equipment; road construction and maintenance; water and sewer systems, mechanics, hydraulics, welding and carpentry.
Skills: This position requires skills in operating heavy equipment in a safe manner.
Abilities: This position requires the ability to: have a good depth perception; follow safety procedures; work independently; communicate effectively orally and in writing; follow verbal and written instructions; establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and the public.
Education and Experience:
The above knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to:
-A High School diploma
-One or more years of experience in operation and maintaining heavy equipment for road construction and road maintenance preferred.
-Must possess a valid state of Montana Commercial driver’s license.
