Summary :
The Endoscopy technician is responsible for the utilization of endoscopy equipment and supplies including biopsy forceps, snares, injection needles, cytology brushes, forceps, dilators, cautery, 6-shooters and ERBE cautery. The Endoscopy technician is responsible for all aseptic techniques during the procedure as well as the scope disinfection process. This includes the pre-cleaning of all scopes in the procedure room, manual cleaning post procedure utilizing all manufacturer and Joint Commission guidelines. The incumbent is responsible for the high level disinfection process utilizing AER scope processing equipment. The incumbent is responsible for proper storage, labeling and use of all chemicals used during these three processes as well as the office Manometry probe supplies and disinfection. The incumbent is responsible for the set-up of all supplies in the procedure room, installation of the scope and retrieval and proper specimen labeling during procedure. The Endoscopy Tech supports the physician in the Operating Room during the ERCP cases. This includes the use of stents, and all ERCP equipment. The Endoscopy Tech is responsible for all infection control within the procedure room and scope processing room. The incumbent works under the direct supervision of physicians and assists the RN in quality care of the patient as well as other tasks needed. The Endoscopy technician is also required to be on-call as needed by the unit, which includes weeknights, holidays and weekends. The incumbent performs duties and tasks in accordance with performance standards established for the job. The incumbent may have access to highly confidential patient, employee and/or organizational proprietary information, and must handle and protect the information in accordance with hospital and system policies, HIPAA requirements and the highest level of ethical standards. The incumbent is responsible for reporting all security events, potential events, or other security risks to the organization.
Responsibilities:
- Communicates and interacts with peers, physicians and other health care members to maximize successful patient outcomes
- Provides care by assisting the endoscopy team under direction of supervisor/physician
- Assists in objective data collection of patient information under direction of supervisor i. e. patient vital signs, height, weight, O2 saturation and patient c/o discomfort
- Responds to emergency situations as directed by supervisor
- Performs delivery functions and other tasks to support endoscopy team within the department and specialty areas where procedures are performed
- Assist ancillary departments in the disinfection/sterilization of endoscopes as requested
- Provides assistance to reception area as necessary; greets patients, makes charts answers phone calls
- Greets patient/families at the window
- Ensures patient signs all appropriate forms
- Assists patient with registration process if necessary
- Maintains a neat, clean and safe environment for patient and staff according to Endoscopy DD
- Assures supplies and equipment necessary for patient care are stored in an organized manner
- Assures all equipment is in working order. Promptly reports malfunctioning equipment
- Demonstrates correct, safe use of equipment according to specific product information
- Correctly cleans and disinfects all necessary equipment between cases according to Endoscopy DD
- Processes instruments/equipment needed for procedures per manufacturer guidelines and POCD's.
- Assures daily cleaning requirement and other assigned tasks are completed in a timely manner
- Responds quickly to unanticipated needs of the endoscopy unit
- Follows appropriate procedure for obtaining/cleaning/disinfecting/sterilizing of equipment and supplies
- Maintains Steris log and high level disinfection log accurately and completely
- Maintains endoscopy suite in a clean organized manner
- Able to work independently in the scope reprocessing room, assuring all chemicals are properly tested, biological monitoring complete according to policy, steris diagnostic is completed per policy, daily task list completed
- Responds quickly to unanticipated needs of the unit
- Demonstrates knowledge of PCD's and Endoscopy DD's
- Prepares Endoscopy procedure room accurately and completely for cases
- Accepts assignments and completes in a timely manner as requested by Supervisor/charge nurse
- Completes i-care as assigned
- Follows guidelines for Universal Precautions
- Maintains appropriate stock levels in procedure rooms/scope rooms
- Participates in educational offerings to increase working knowledge of GI conditions, endoscopy procedures, high level disinfection, equipment etc.
- Has attended at least 50% of staff meetings or initialed minutes of missed meetings
- Reads and initials communication book on a routine basis
- Precepts team members to job functions as necessary
- Communicates and interacts with peers, physicians and other health care members to maximize successful patient outcomes
- Communicates appropriate information to RN/supervisor
- Participates in staff meetings. Assumes responsibility for obtaining information if unable to attend
- Uses appropriate channels to present concerns and offer potential solutions
- Takes initiative in helping other team members
- Communicates with other departments as needed
