Scope of Job
To provide professional and advanced skills necessary to perform installations, programming, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of energy management computerized systems. Responsible for managing a specialized department responsible for building automation controls and equipment.
Description of Duties
- Functions as a working supervisor over Energy Management Technicians and other employees engaged in installing, programming, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing energy management computerized systems.
- Trains and instructs employees on proper work procedures and policies.
- Assigns work orders. Plan, direct and monitor work activities of all assigned staff; maintain records and provide reports as necessary.
- Assists in communicating and enforcing policies and procedures; resolving problems; addressing employee concerns and complaints.
- Coordinates the scheduling, directs, and supervises energy management projects. · Coordinates workflow and schedule to ensure deadlines are met, priorities are recognized, and policies/procedures are followed.
- Participates in the interviewing and selection of job applicants and the performance evaluation of assigned employees; may recommend personnel actions (e.g., hiring, termination, promotion, discipline).
- Inspects and performs preventive maintenance on automation systems, equipment, and components to ensure serviceable conditions; identifies necessary maintenance and repairs.
- Coordinates and oversees construction/repair projects affecting energy management system and specialized equipment to ensure conformance with university standards.
- Assists with planning, review and selection of vendors, and adoption of specifications and plans for projects; consults with engineers as needed.
- Monitors department inventory: initiates paperwork to purchase materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Performs cost and time estimates on projects. Submits requests for purchases.
- Performs designated functions in supervisor’s absence.
- Trains facilities staff and students in equipment use and operation.
- Prepares and compiles reports and maintains records.
- Responds 24/7 to emergencies involving building automation systems and/or controls.
- Performs other duties as required.
Supervision Received
General supervision from assigned supervisor.
Supervision Given
Supervision given to technicians and semi-skilled and unskilled workers.
Required Education
College/vocational/technical training in electronics equipment repair or related course of study in line with an Associate’s Degree.
Licenses/Certifications
As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s).
Required Experience
- Four (4) years of experience in building automation controls, general HVAC, and electrical systems, including supervisory experience, or
- Three (3) years of the required experience with an Associate’s degree or equivalent from a 2-year college or technical school.
Preferred Experience
Experience in a higher education environment or other facilities setting with similar Mechanical and Controls Equipment. Knowledge in Siemens Automation Control Systems, Johnson Controls Automation Systems, Insight Graphics Systems, and HVAC controls. Experience in reading and interpreting HVAC and related drawings and diagrams.
Equipment
Knowledge and skill in the use of multimeters, cable tracers, temperature, and relative humidity testers, velometer, basic hand tools, laptop with software to work in different programs and controls for both technical and administrative duties. Use of personal computer and standard office equipment.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Industrial, office and educational environment. Some travel and weekend work is required. Work involves occasionally having to respond to emergencies on a 24/7 basis. Will be occasionally exposed to outside environments such as hot, dry, wet or cold.
Other
Some work is in restricted spaces with exposure to dust. Some duties and working conditions may create bodily strain and discomfort. Some work involves a laboratory environment. Duties may involve the lifting and moving of heavy objects, stooping, crawling, climbing, reaching, and other activities requiring physical exertion. Danger of falls, electrical shock and burns are hazards and condition inherent to the trade or assignment. This position will be subject to a pre-employment physical. Position requires the use of personal protective equipment in the form of safety shoes, safety glasses and protective eyewear.
