    Job Summary

    Location: Stockton, CA

    As a Byproduct Manager in the biomass industry, you will play a critical role in optimizing the utilization of wood ash byproducts generated during biomass production and processing. Your responsibilities will involve overseeing the efficient handling, marketing, and value extraction from these byproducts. This position requires a blend of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and strong communication skills.

    Key Accountabilities

    Byproduct Assessment and Inventory:

    • Conduct thorough assessments of byproducts generated from biomass operations (such as fly ash, bed ash, and other residuals).
    • Maintain an accurate inventory of available byproducts, including their quality, quantity, and potential applications.


    Market Research and Analysis:

    • Stay informed about market trends, demand, and pricing for biomass byproducts.
    • Identify potential buyers, industries, or applications where these byproducts can be utilized effectively.
    • Build strong relationships with suppliers / aggregators.


    Strategic Planning:

    • Develop strategies to maximize the value of byproducts while minimizing waste.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (including operations, asset management, and environmental) to align byproduct management with overall business goals.
    • Build base of 3rd party aggregators.


    Byproduct Utilization:

    • Explore innovative uses for byproducts, such as cement additives, fertilizer, land application or other value-added products.
    • Coordinate with external partners (e.g., energy companies, manufacturers) to create mutually beneficial partnerships.


    Quality Control and Compliance:

    • Ensure that byproducts meet quality standards and regulatory requirements.
    • Implement best practices for handling, storage, and transportation of byproducts.


    Cost Management:

    • Monitor costs associated with byproduct management (e.g., storage, transportation, processing).
    • Optimize cost-efficiency while maintaining quality.
    • Maintain budget and forecasts for current and future years.


    Environmental Sustainability:

    • Ensure compliance with all permit requirements, law, and prudent industry practices.
    • Promote sustainable practices in byproduct utilization.
    • Ensure compliance with internal ash management plans, including monitoring and visiting aggregators and end users of wood ash.


    Reporting and Documentation:

    • Maintain accurate records related to byproduct transactions, sales, and utilization.
    • Prepare regular reports for management and stakeholders.
    • Prepare inputs for annual environmental reporting.

    Minimum Education & Experience Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., forestry, environmental science, business management) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Experience in the biomass industry, particularly in byproduct management.


    Other Qualifications

    • Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess market dynamics.
    • Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
    • Familiarity with environmental and fertilizer regulations and sustainability practices.
    • Problem-solving mindset and adaptability.
    • Ability to travel within California and to Michigan as required.

    • Frequently climb or balance and occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
    • Talk & hear; use hands & fingers; handle & feel; and able to reach with hands and arms extensively.
    • Vision requirements for this position include close vision, color vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
    • Enter and work in confined space areas.


    Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions, and heat and cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and/or machinery and equipment with high temperatures. Exposed to protected and unprotected heights, which requires the use of a personal fall protection system (harness/lifeline). Occasionally exposed to vibration and fumes or airborne particles which will require the use of personal protective equipment including respirators; flame retardant clothing; self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), etc.
