    JOB SUMMARY

    Under general supervision of, and reporting to, the Parking Enforcement Manager, a Senior Parking Representative works variable days and hours enforcing campus and state parking rules and regulations by methodically patrolling parking lots and roads on foot and in a vehicle and writing parking citations. In addition, a parking representative provides a variety of other services for the campus community and is responsible for a small amount of daily administrative work.

    Budgeted Salary: $28.15/per hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
    Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

    JOB DUTIES

    70% - Parking Enforcement

    • Drives a campus vehicle while on patrol and for general, job-related transportation.
    • Enforces parking regulations and policies and evaluates situations to take appropriate action such as writing a citation or issuing a warning.
    • Identifies parking-related issues, and suggests improvements.
    • Generates citations by entering information into a handheld electronic device.
    • Hand-writes forms, as needed, legibly and accurately.
    • Identifies vehicles with excessive unpaid citations and immobilizes or has them towed adhering to established and approved procedures.
    • Photographs vehicles and documents "boots" and significant incidents.
    • Independently initiates vehicle and foot patrol when working assigned areas.
    • Testifies in court if subpoenaed.

    25% - Other Field Operations

    • Uses jumper cables to start vehicle batteries as needed to assist campus community members.
    • Provides information and gives direction to visitors and affiliates.
    • Provides training and education to employees and community members on parking enforcement-related matters.
    • Directs traffic and provides information and related services to ensure the safe flow of traffic and pedestrians.
    • Responds as directed to radio calls following radio etiquette as trained.
    • Identifies and mitigates any unsafe conditions or health risks encountered
    • Posts barricades and temporary signs as directed.
    • Participates in large campus events by assisting in the implementation of special traffic routes and parking logistics.

    5% - Administrative Duties

    • Assists with planning traffic routes and parking logistics needs for the department and campus during special events.
    • Supervises students and temporary workers.
    • Maintains University issued equipment and keeps work area in clean and workable order.
    • Participates in meetings and completes training relevant to the position.
    • Completes daily, monthly, overtime, and special event logs in accordance with time and attendance records.
    • Maintains the security of University issued keys.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Knowledge of and ability to use standard computing tools including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, email, and online calendaring systems.
    • Knowledge of how to operate a handheld, two-way radio with the ability to effectively communicate and receive information.
    • Parking enforcement experience including inspecting vehicles for permits and issuing citations to vehicles.
    • Experience making decisions and solving problems with minimum supervision including exercising independent judgment in problem solving, remaining objective and representing differing points of view.
    • Skills to work tactfully, courteously, and effectively with a diverse community of various racial, ethnic, and economic groups with diverse lifestyles and refrain from expressing prejudices toward any group of people citing individuals based on biases and emotions.
    • Skills to work effectively with others as a member of a team.
    • Ability to independently evaluate each situation and exercise sound judgment to decide what action is warranted.
    • Ability to present a positive, service-oriented public image and maintain a courteous and harmonious working relationship with the campus community, other department staff, and members of the public.
    • Ability to complete work with attention to detail and write clear, accurate, and legible citations, daily activity logs, and reports.
    • Ability to read, understand, interpret and follow department policies, rules, and California Vehicle Codes. Ability to learn and stay knowledgeable of all UC-Santa Cruz parking regulations and permit requirements.
    • Ability to think and respond clearly in hostile situations with a knowledge of how to respond to anger and hostility with professionalism, tact, and diplomacy and defuse situations.
    • Time management skills with the ability to work efficiently and professionally to initiate parking enforcement services with or without direct supervision.
    • Ability to maintain University equipment in clean workable order.
    • Ability to operate a handheld citation device to generate parking citations.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Ability to set and achieve goals and objectives consistent with the Department, Division of Finance, Operations and Administration (FOA), and University vision statements and goals.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
    • Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
    • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
    • Interviewees will be required to provide a current DMV record.
    • Ability to walk multiple nightly rounds on uneven surfaces and repeatedly climb stairs.
    • Ability to work long periods of time in wilderness conditions and to travel to remote areas.
    • Ability to walk to and work in remote areas with rugged terrain, heavy brush, biting and stinging insects, bears and mountain lions.
    • The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
    • Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
    • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
    • Ability to occasionally work overtime with little or no advance notice.
    • Ability to work overtime including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs, and work an alternate work schedule shift as required.
    • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
    • Clery Act: This position has been identified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA); required to report crimes, incidents, and disciplinary referral statistics as required by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (20 USC * 1092(f)).
