Engineering Director plans and directs all aspects of engineering activities and projects within an organization. Ensures all engineering projects, initiatives, and processes are in conformance with organization's established policies and objectives. Being an Engineering Director utilizes best practice engineering methods and provides expert technical guidance for engineering initiatives. Incorporates components, materials, and tools that result in cost-effective and quality output. Additionally, Engineering Director manages overall engineering budget and costs. Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering or related discipline. Typically reports to top management. The Engineering Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be an Engineering Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     Here's some experience we are seeking...

    • FCC First or General class license highly desirable.
    • SBE, CBRE, CBTE, CSRE, CSTE, or CPBE certification highly desirable. DMB or AMB certification a plus. 
    • Minimum 10 years of Broadcast Engineering experience.
    • Strong leadership experience; growth and encouragement focused, balancing relationships, results, and health.
    • Deep working knowledge in most our all of the core areas listed below, and knowledgeable across all broadcast engineering and leadership related disciplines, including:
      • FCC rules and regulations (at least 47 C.F.R. Parts 0-2, 11, 17, 73, and 74).
      • Radio or Television Broadcasting, specifically Broadcast Engineering.
      • RF Engineering, including exciters, transmitters, filters, antennas, microwave, and satellite.
      • Radio broadcast facility design and construction, with a particular emphasis on transmitter sites (buildings, towers, power systems, etc.).
      • Computer/IT hardware and software principles (networking skills required, programming skills a plus).
      • Technical team leadership.
    • Mathematical skills including probability & statistical inference, fundamentals of algebra, geometry & trigonometry, and application of these mathematical concepts to practical situations.
    • Reasoning abilities, including the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
    • Language skills, including the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Possess skills in preparing and giving presentations. 
    • Experience with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Outlook, Word, and Visio, as well as a working understanding of NAV Dynamics or other financial, project management, and radio propagation software.
    • Bachelors’ Degree, or equivalent combination of education/training with relevant experience.

    Here’s some of what you will be doing...

     

    Operations:

    • Accountable for the overall reliability and uptime of all EMF radio signals, Team’s effectiveness and job satisfaction, and controlling costs, implemented via multiple approaches, including:.
      • Provide functional and strategic leadership for Engineering function and Team, ensuring ministry-wide collaboration and communication, facilitating appropriate resolution of issues and competing priorities. Ensure alignment of Engineering Initiatives with Ministry objectives.
      • Establish and enforce procedures and standards for design, selection, installation, maintenance, operation, and repair of all equipment within Engineering’s responsibility, ensuring that all equipment is operating properly, safely, reliably, and legally.
      • Ensure work performed is compliant with both applicable FCC rules and good engineering practice, with an eye toward reliability and high quality while maintaining or improving long-term cost efficiency. Ensure expeditious restoration to proper operation of any facility found to be out of compliance and encourage efforts toward the goal of reducing and eliminating broadcast facility downtime.
      • Communicate with, and requesting work from, team members and engineers (including contract engineers) in other cities and states, both directly and through subordinates, to resolve technical problems.
      • In collaboration with others, research, design, and develop new technologies and methodologies to improve Engineering operations.
      • Preparing, approve, and manage departmental operating, personnel, and capital expenditures budgets.
      • Monitor the progress of operational projects and work to ensure those activities occur according to schedule and budget.
      • Participate in strategic decisions about broadcast-related technology and assess and advise senior management on technological and procedural advances.

    Leadership:

    • Accountable for the development of self and Team members within area of oversight, effectuated through efforts such as:
      • Interact with all team members to encourage, evaluate, train, build trust, assist, etc., including regularly traveling to engage with Field Team members.
      • Provide strategic leadership, mentoring and development of a highly competent and responsive Engineering team, ensuring alignment of goals and ministry initiatives with EMF’s mission. Foster a learning environment where training, risk management, operational best practices, and Biblical values work hand-in-hand with creative and entrepreneurial solutions.
      • Utilize the EMF Leadership Framework to set professional goals for self and direct reports. Actively seek and partake in training & education to deepen Biblical understanding, technical knowledge, media/business acumen, leadership knowledge, emotional intelligence, interpersonal awareness, and communication skills.
      • Demonstrate the qualities of a lifetime learner in the disciplines relevant to effectively leading and performing job duties by taking personal responsibility for professional development and training.
      • Oversee training and development of personnel at all levels within area of oversight.
