  • USC’s Information Sciences Institute (ISI), (“Institute”),  a unit of the university’s Viterbi School of Engineering, is a world leader in the research and development of advanced artificial intelligence, information processing, computing, microelectronics, cybersecurity, and communications technologies. ISI’s 400 faculty, professional staff and graduate students carry out extraordinary information sciences research at three distinct locations - Marina Del Rey, CA; Arlington, VA; and Waltham, MA.

    Funded by the CHIPS and Science Act, the Microelectronics Commons program is a network of regional technology hubs acting on a shared mission: to expand the nation’s global leadership in microelectronics.  Through this program, the Microelectronics Commons program is accelerating domestic prototyping and growing a pipeline of U.S. based semiconductor talent.  USC ISI will serve as the lead for the California DREAMS Hub.

    *This position’s location is in Marina del Rey, CA. As such, we are looking for someone within a commutable distance from this office and have the ability to travel to the various hubs within the Southern California area.*

    The Microelectronics Fabrication Engineering Manager will have primary responsibility for overseeing and coordinating the Microelectronics Fabrication team, which will have a core team at USC/ISI complemented by a distributed team at our partner university labs and industry fabs. 

    Job Accountabilities:

    • Maintain knowledge of full and partial process flows across our partner facilities and will manage a large team that supports users, technologies, and facilities.
    • Coordinate with users to ascertain the type and level of effort required within the DREAMS hub and outside fab facilities.
    • Oversee a myriad of projects that will range from: (1) short turnaround unit processes to (2) multi-step prototyping, to (3) full flow pre-production projects.
    • Interact with users and the PIES engineers to engage in the appropriate level of prefabrication design training and services, followed by the development and execution of the nano-fab processing plan.
    • Ensure that appropriate process control and trouble-shooting analytics are captured and oversee any required in-situ and post process metrology and wafer/chip evaluation steps.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • 5 years of experience leading teams of semiconductor engineers
    • 10 years of experience with nano fabrication tools and compound semiconductors

    Minimum Education: Doctorate degree or Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education

    Minimum Experience:

    • 10 years of experience in a related field such as solid state physics or microelectronics engineering
    • Demonstrated record of outstanding contributions and experience in an area of microelectronics fabrication
    • Supervisory skills
    • Demonstrated record of outstanding research contributions and experience in an area of microelectronics, technical proficiency, exceptional creativity, successful collaboration with others, and independent thought.
    • Demonstrated ability to exert technical leadership, communicate technical ideas, coordinate individual contributions and plans that will build and sustain a successful hub.

    The annual base salary range for this position is $237,574 - $265,794.
