  • Duties

    The PMO provides program and acquisition management for the FAA infrastructure programs that transform, modernize and sustain the National Airspace System (NAS). The focus of the PMO is engineering, acquisition and second-level engineering software maintenance for the FAA 's automation systems. The goal is for the student trainee to become familiar with programs, projects and functions of the organization.

    As a trainee, the incumbent performs a mixture of routine and somewhat complex engineering tasks under the general direction of a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or other more experienced employee. Assists manager and other employees in day-to-day operations. Responsibilities may include, assisting manager or more experienced engineers with the following:

    • developing test outlines, approaches and procedures used for documenting test cases and collecting data
    • developing and modifying code
    • providing comments for engineering designs and reviews
    • providing technical support activities for site support
    • coding, configuring and implementing server/web-based software and tools to automate and provide metrics data
    • investigating and implementing solutions to system, network and process issues
    • answering help desk calls
    • identifying, assessing and communicating software changes
    • developing and executing system outreach activities
    • migrating users from one system to another
    • leverages academic model(s) and creative perspectives to suggest ideas and approaches for manager's consideration
    • communicating information through technical reports, notes, telecons and briefings
    Regularly coordinates with a manager and/or other more experienced employee to plan time, prioritize assignments, and use assigned resources to accomplish tasks.

    Contacts are primarily internal to one organizational unit, with a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee to share basic information and to receive guidance. In some areas, may have limited contacts with external customers.

    Established policies/procedures provide detailed guidance for almost all assignments, with little or no discretion. Receives detailed instructions from a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee.

    Regularly refers problems and work issues to a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee for guidance.

    Other features of the Gateways Internship Program:

    APPOINTMENT - If selected, your appointment may not exceed a total of 120 days after completing educational requirements. Participation in this program may be terminated at any time.

    AGREEMENT: All participants must sign a written Gateways Internship Agreement with their manager that clearly identifies expectations of the appointment such as duties, length of appointment, work schedule, training, mentorship etc.

    CONVERSION: Although not guaranteed, an intern may be converted from the Internship Program to a permanent appointment without further competition in accordance with established policy. Conversion must occur within 120 days after successful completion of the educational program (awarding of diploma, certificate, or degree), completion of a minimum of 640 hours of career-related work experience, required training, mentorship, and other requirements in accordance with the intern’s participant agreement. Additionally, the intern must meet qualification requirements and any other position requirements associated with the position to which converted.     Qualifications

    FV-C: To qualify for the FV-C, you must be currently enrolled full time or at least half time in an accredited educational institution (college, university, vocational school, trade school, etc.) and show completion of 1 full academic year of post-high school study. Full or half time enrollment is defined by your educational institution.

    BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

    Degree Requirement: course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering.

    This occupation has specific educational requirements for entry and applicants must show evidence that their planned academic program will meet those requirements (i.e. transcript reflecting enrollment in applicable programs). Students who graduate without meeting those requirements may not be converted to the target position and could be separated from federal service. Educational requirements for conversion to the target position are: Degree in Professional Engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least 1 curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2)include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than 1st year physics & chemistry) in 5 of these 7 areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials; (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials; and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
