Env., Health, and Safety Engineer implements and maintains company policies adhering to local, state and federal environmental, health and safety regulations. Involved in the design and development of facilities, work areas and work procedures and makes environmental, health and safety recommendations accordingly. Being an Env., Health, and Safety Engineer is responsible for preparing, maintaining, and updating environmental policy and procedure manuals. Ensures compliance with all environmental, health and safety regulations, and keeps abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization. Additionally, Env., Health, and Safety Engineer serves as contact with all federal, state, and local regulatory bodies. May require a bachelor's degree in area of specialty. Typically reports to a supervisor. To be an Env., Health, and Safety Engineer typically requires 0-2 years of related experience. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. Under the direction of the Safety Director, directly supervises Safety Officers. Ensures assigned Safety Policies maximize compliance with the diverse mandates of agencies such as TJC, CMS, the FDNY, the NYS DOH, the NYC DOMHH, OSHA, the EPA, the NYS DEC, the NYC DEP, the US DHHS. Stays current with institutional policies and procedures, implements and communicates requirements to staff, as appropriate.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and other employees. Interacts professionally, courteously, and appropriately with patients, visitors and other employees. Behaves in a manner consistent with maintaining and furthering a positive public perception of BronxCare Health System and its employees.
- Contributes to and participates in the Performance/Quality Improvement activities of the assigned department. Contribution and participation includes data collection, analysis, implementation of and compliance with risk management and claims activities, support of and participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams, consistent adherence to the specific rules and regulations of the BronxCare Health System (a) Safety and Security Policies, (b) Risk Management: Incident and Occurrence Reporting, (c) Infection Control Policies and Procedures and (d) Patient and Customer Service.
- Ensures that all Life Safety Inspections and maintenance are completed on a timely basis, i.e.:a. Sprinkler and Standpipe inspectionsb. Fire Drill schedules for all sitesc. Fire alarms, fire pumps and fire extinguishers
- Assists with training and monitoring of all hospital departments for compliance with safety policies and procedures.
- Ensures compliance with applicable codes and standards of JCAHO, DOH, FDNYC, EPA, OSHA and NFPA regulations.
- Assists the Director with all BCHS and regulatory agency inspections during surveys relative to safety issues and initiate and monitor corrective actions for violations related to safety issues.
- Ensures that appropriate documentation is maintained for scheduled tests of fire extinguishers, fire alarms and other safety systems.
- Conducts regularly scheduled safety surveillance rounds in conjunction with site Safety Officers to identify existing or potential safety hazards. Initiate corrective action and follow-up to ensure correction.
- Special Care Center (Nursing Home) safety requirements:• Under the direction of the Safety Director, will assist the NursingHome with all safety requirements.
- Ensure that the eleven (11) key elements of the ILSM are met during each project and that communication of all findings are reported promptly to the appropriate managers, staff, contractors and senior management.
- Minimum of ten (10) years experience in fire prevention and building services.
- Minimum of fifteen (15) years management experience in large public or private organization.
- NYC Fire Department Fire Safety Director Certificate of Fitness (F-58)
- NYCFD Certificate of Fitness Maintenance and Sprinkler System (W-12)
- NYCFD Certificate of Fitness Maintenance and Supervision Interior Fire Alarm System (F-90)
- NYCFD Certificate of Fitness Fire Drill Instructor (W-13) preferred.
