Env., Health, and Safety Engineering Manager plans, develops and manages company policies for adhering to local, state and federal environment, health and safety regulations. Designs and develops facilities, work areas and work procedures. Being an Env., Health, and Safety Engineering Manager directs preparation, maintenance, and updating of environmental policy and procedure manuals. Ensures compliance with all environmental, health and safety regulations, and keeps abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization.     How you’ll make an impact…
    This position provides support, strategic direction, tactical execution, policy guidance, and advice in the areas of safety, health, the environment, and sustainability for Niowave. This leadership role has primary responsibility for the development, implementation, and ongoing management of EHS programs that manage, mitigate, and where possible, eliminate EHS risks to Niowave’s employees, contractors, facilities, and communities in which the company operates.
     
    What you will work on…
    Business:
    • Provides advice in the development of enterprise strategic EHS plans and to ensure that company objectives are in alignment with current best practices for occupational health and environmental health and safety.
    • In collaboration with location leadership team develops robust EHS plans to ensure conformance with regulatory and company requirements.
    • Develops location EHS goals, monitors performance and reports on progress.
    • Assists in the development of the annual EHS budget; actively manages and monitors performance to EHS budget.
    Technical:
    • Collaborates closely with Radiation Safety team to assure alignment between Rad Safety and EHS policies and procedures.
    • Manages implementation of corporate EHS policies, procedures, and programs.
    • Monitors and ensures optimal performance of Environmental Health and Safety programs.
    • Conducts on-going data and risk analyses to trend and identify known and/or emerging EHS risks and develop mitigation strategies.
    • Leads continuous assessments of EHS hazards and risks and provides assistance where specific technical expertise is required to meet applicable regulations, policies, procedures, and programs.
    • Develops and leads the incident investigation processes (including near-miss/injury); conducts root cause analysis, prepares investigation report results, identifies and implements corrective and preventative measures to eliminate repeat incidents.
    • Manages the implementation of actions and activities to minimize and manage workers’ compensation claims and associated costs.
    • Collaborates with subject matter experts and People Operations on annual training plans and required EHS training; develops and manages the EHS training program; delivers appropriate EHS training; ensures training records are maintained.
    Culture Management & Staff Development:
    • Effectively builds and maintains collaborative relations with colleagues and internal customers; positively influences and gains buy-in at multiple levels for high engagement and desired outcomes.
    • Coaches at all levels of the organization on the disciplines of an EHS culture.
    • Acts as an effective change agent; promotes excellence and challenges traditional thinking, boundaries, and modes of operation.
    Supervisory Responsibility
    • None initially.  Functional authority per role.
    • Team Management duties (if assigned) include the following duties and required experience:
      • Leads and inspires a diverse team of skilled professionals.
      • Establishes and maintains a technical direction and supervisory oversight structure for the department, including career progression and succession planning.
      • Hires, fires, promotes, disciplines, coaches, and awards staff members according to organizational policies.
      • Within the department and across the organization, fosters a culture of respect, safety, quality, and continuous improvement aligning with the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
      • 3 years staff management experience, with demonstrated ability to build cohesive teams, establish career development tracks, and succession planning.

    • Strong understanding and experience in EHS Management Systems and their successful implementation; substantive knowledge of applicable EHS regulations.
    • Strong technical ability to work, collaborate and negotiate with government officials, consultants, and other third-party stakeholders.

    Required education and experience…
    • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline (prefer Environmental Sciences, Occupational Health, Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, or Industrial Hygiene);or equivalent level of education, experience, and skills.
    • 6 years of progressive experience in EHS in manufacturing or production operations.

    Preferred education and experience
    • Masters degree in science/engineering field or equivalent experience.
    • Experience working with radioactive material and understanding NRC requirements.
    • Experience working in a start-up environment with bottoms up build of full EHS program.
    • Knowledgeable in cGMP regulations.
    Other things to note…
    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
    • Full-Time, Salary/Exempt position.
    • Position may also be filled as a one-year term.
    • The company’s standard operating hours are Monday thru Friday 6a – 6p with production related activities requiring 24/7/365 shifts. 
    • This position will have regular working hours during M – F with an expectation of adjusting to meet with managers and employees working outside of the standards operating hours as needed. 
    • Niowave has multiple locations within the Lansing area.  Travel between locations is expected in the role.
