Environmental Compliance Specialist conducts required environmental tests, analysis and observations. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Additionally, Environmental Compliance Specialist relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks.     This position is established at the Environmental Health Specialist 2 level. This classification, Environmental Health Specialist 1, will be used for training purposes of the Environmental Health Specialist 2 position. Through various types of on-the-job training and self-study, employees will learn to carry out the duties of the full working level (Environmental Health Specialist 2) and will be reclassified when full level is accomplished.

    • Issues licenses/permits for food establishments and onsite sewer systems.
    • Reviews plans and specifications for land development, subsurface sewage systems, and food establishments for compliance with applicable laws.
    • Evaluates environmental health conditions through inspections, surveys, and investigations of food establishments, onsite sewer systems, and land development for compliance with laws, regulations, and standards.
    • Evaluates inspectional findings, prepares written and oral reports of findings and makes recommendations for corrective action.
    • Consults with business proprietors regarding health regulations.
    • Prepares documentation for possible legal action.
    • Ability to adjust schedule to respond to public health concerns or emergencies.
    • Promotes public awareness of environmental laws, regulations, and standards through oral presentations and news releases.
    • Collaborates with customers to problem solve and find meaningful solutions
    • Provides high quality customer service in person and over the phone.
    • Provides support and team coverage to peers.
    • Promotes a respectful and collaborative workplace.
    • Follows department and organizational values
    • Other duties, as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Good knowledge of Environmental Health Practices
    • Must be eligible to sit for REHS/RS credential examination by having a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, or PhD with 30 semester hours in basic science coursework and credit for a college level Math or Statistics class.     • Licensure Requirement: Licensed in Idaho as an Environmental Health Specialist or Environmental Health Specialist Trainee or obtain possession of a temporary permit (I.C. 54-2408)
    • Valid driver's license.
