Being an Environmental Compliance Specialist, Sr. requires a bachelor's degree in a related area and at least 4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Additionally, Environmental Compliance Specialist, Sr. relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complicated tasks. May direct and lead the work of others. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. USAEC: Environmental Compliance Internship

    The U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC) is offering a bachelor's level internship at the Fort Huachuca facility in environmental compliance.

    What will I be doing and why should I apply?

    As an ORISE participant and under the guidance of a mentor, you will be collaborating on a wide array of tasks pertaining to environmental compliance. These learning opportunities may include data collection, data management, lab analysis, report writing and document preparation, and inspections. As the selected candidate, you may participant in field work and attending inspections, GIS data gathering and compliance duties. Laboratoryexperiencesinclude helping at the Fort’s Wastewater Treatment Plant and assisting in daily lab testing requirements.  Document preparation can include draft minor plans and review of memos and other outgoing correspondence. Public outreach opportunities are possible and happen occasionally throughout the year (e.g., public/school tours and presentations, external site meetings, etc.) Training opportunities are provided, at minimum, in OSHA Hazwoper, RCRA, Method 9 Visual opacity, and unexploded ordnance (UXO) safety and identification. Other training opportunities include ATV use, and ArcGIS Army Geospatial Standards.

    What is the anticipated start date?

    The US Army Environmental Command is ready to make appointments effective immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

    What is the appointment length?

    This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

    What are the benefits?

    You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAEC. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

    About ORISE

    This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program.
