GENERAL PURPOSE
The Environmental Scientist provides support and regulatory oversight for the Environmental Waste
Management Program, as well as providing support and regulatory oversight for the Mining Program under
the direction of the Environmental Waste Management Program Manager.
SUPERVISION
The Environmental Scientist is under the direct supervision and evaluated by the Environmental Waste
Management Program Manager.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Interprets and applies technical standards, regulations and policies.
Reviews and evaluates technical documents and reports including hazardous waste permit applications,
closure plans, sampling and analysis plans, and standard operating procedures. Data summary reports,
groundwater monitoring data. Analyze data, identify trends, prepare written comments that document tribal
issues.
Participate in meetings and conference calls with internal departments and staff, outside Federal, State
agencies including but not limited to the USEPA, USFS, USBLM, Idaho Department of Environmental Quality.
May performs multi-media environmental inspections, documents data, provide regulatory oversight of
monitoring activities, remedial design and construction activities.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST
Monitor compliance with Permit Conditions, Administrative Orders on Consent and other requirements to
ensure compliance with regulations including RCRA, CERCLA, Tribal Waste Management Act and other
applicable Tribal ordinances.
Review NEPA Environmental Impact Statements, Environmental Assessments, reports, analyze impacts to
tribal resources, tribal lands and aboriginal territories, provide written comments and summarize issues for
management.
Conduct oversight at hazardous waste sites which may include collecting environmental samples, using a
field XRF instrument, evaluating data and reporting.
Review, Interpret and Report environmental data.
Must be flexible (adapting quickly to change(s)).
Maintain databases and a record system.
MUST MAINTAIN STRICT CONFIDENTIALITY OF ALL INFORMATION PROCESSED THROUGH THE
DEPARTMENT INCLUDING RECORDS, REPORTS, DOCUMENTS, CONVERSATIONS, ETC. A breach of
confidentiality will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including termination from
employment.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum qualifications (Grade 15):
or other related Environmental Science Field; and
environmental safety such as EPA laws and creating/implementing effective compliance programs.
Preferred qualifications (Grade 16):
Engineering or other related Environmental Science field with a passion for protecting the
environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST
Must have a valid Idaho driver’s license and insurable with the Shoshone Bannock Tribes Insurance Company.
Qualified Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Member/Indian and Veterans Preference will apply in compliance with
the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual Section 1260.

alcohol and drug screening prior to being hired or appointed. Refusal to take the test will render the applicant
ineligible for employment or political appointment with the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes. Applicants who test
positive for alcohol or banned drugs will not be hired and will be ineligible for any type of employment with
the Tribal Government for 90 days thereafter per the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes Substance Abuse Policy,
Resolution PRSL-98-0405.
