Environmental, Health and Safety Director oversees organizational compliance with local, state and federal environment, health and safety regulations. Ensures that environmental policy and procedure manuals are available and updated at all times. Being an Environmental, Health and Safety Director ensures compliance with all environmental, health and safety regulations, and keeps abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization. Ensures projects are completed on time and within budget. Additionally, Environmental, Health and Safety Director requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a unit/department head. The Environmental, Health and Safety Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB:

    SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: Under general direction, the Manager of Environmental Health & Safety plans, develops, implements, administers, directs, evaluates, and maintains programs necessary to ensure a safe and healthful environment. Ensures that University operations are in compliance with applicable codes and regulations.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

     

    • Ensures a safe and healthful environment for faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Conducts ongoing analysis and evaluation of university policy and compliance programs and implements changes as necessary.
    • Serves as the primary representative for the University with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies and leads compliance site inspections.
    • Consults and works collaboratively with a broad range of internal customers and stakeholders to maintain departmental compliance, implement changes, and provide education and training. Ensures that requests for reasonable accommodation are promptly evaluated and processed.
    • Directs, advises, supports, and/or serves on various committees as assigned.
    • Reviews, revises, updates, and maintains EHS records and document tracking and instructs in their use. Develops communication systems for the dissemination of environmental health and safety information. Ensures creation and submission of annual compliance program reports.
    • Oversees and coordinates University-wide facilities inspection programs and reviews reports of accidents, hazard complaints, incident reports, injuries and near misses and investigates causes; identifies areas of high injury and accident rates and develops safety programs to address them. Collaborates with the Risk Manager and Risk Management Staff.
    • Manages, coordinates, and supports all fire prevention and code enforcement activities related to large gatherings/functions, including fire life safety inspections and building inspections.
    • Supports emergency management and preparedness planning, activities, programs, and operations. Establishes priorities and develops policies and procedures.
    • Works collaboratively with various departments, such as the Department of Public Safety and Campus Leadership groups on disaster preparedness.
    • Supports the maintenance of the approved emergency operations center and local department operations centers, as well as functions as the EOC Safety Officer.
    • Manages University Environment Health and Safety education through the development and implementation of a variety of training programs. 
    • Supports larger FMS initiatives and acts as project manager as assigned. Develops project scope, specifications, and cost estimates to bid as required.
    • Develops and manage assigned program budgets while identifying cost-effective strategies for maintaining University safety and environmental programs.
    • Responds to various emergency situations after hours as required.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

     

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

    • Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills, including excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
    • Proven ability to work with minimal supervision, promote teamwork, problem solve, and apply institutional policies and procedures. 
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and LEHS-related compliance software.


    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:  This position will have supervisory responsibilities. 

     


    QUALIFICATIONS: 

    • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety, and Health, or related field required; Masters’ degree desirable.
    • Five years of related experience is preferred.
    • Must have a Kentucky, or be able to obtain a license within 90 days of hire. 


    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Physically able to conduct inspections and carry equipment used for inspections
    • Ability to continuously stand or walk
    • Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs, and lift frequently
    • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
