Environmental Manager oversees the analysis and evaluation of air, water, and land systems to determine if pollutants are present and directs the implementation of appropriate corrective action if necessary. Develops and plans policies and procedures related to air, water, and land systems in accordance with organization and government rules and regulations. Being an Environmental Manager evaluates operations and makes recommendations to reduce waste or pollution. Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering or related discipline. Additionally, Environmental Manager typically reports to head of a unit/department. The Environmental Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be an Environmental Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Your Opportunity

    Are you interested in using your software and hardware technology experience to problem solve and conduct scientific experiments in the field under challenging conditions? As a temporary, part-time Environmental Technician you will be in an hourly role to support the development and implementation of a sediment incubation study of Lake Campbell in Skagit County, WA from approximately July 2024 - January 2025.

    In this role we will count on you to:

    • Support the development of a sampling and analysis design for a sediment incubation study
    • Set up sediment incubation champers under direction of Western Washington University professors 
    • Provide field support to Herrera limnologist for sediment core collections 
    • Carefully and precisely record activities and measurements in the lab and in the field 
    • Implement the sediment incubation as designed, including dosing some sediment cores with alum, elevating the pH of some cores, and bubbling some cores with nitrogen gas (anaerobic incubation) and with ambient air (aerobic incubation) 
    • Collect water quality samples from the overlying water of the sediment cores and conduct laboratory evaluation for total and soluble reactive phosphorus
    • Complete miscellaneous tasks to complete lab studies and field monitoring 
    • Manage collected data using spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel) 
    • Conduct data analysis in R 
    • Support writing the final finding and report 

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education, Experience, & Licensure/Certifications 

    • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in environmental science or related discipline at Western Washington University 
    • Attention to detail and ability to organize and compile observations and data
    • Ability to carry out detailed instructions as well as think creatively to carry out lab and field monitoring assignments
    • Valid driver's license

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

    • High attention to detail
    • Excellent problem-solving, verbal and written communication, design, development, and debugging skills
    • Carrying and lifting materials and equipment up to 40 pounds typical in the lab or field

    This is a temporary, part-time position for up to 24 hours per week, and it is not eligible for benefits unless where required by law. The anticipated duration of this position is June 2024 - January 2025.

    The hourly rate for this position is $22.02.
