Additionally, Environmental Manager typically reports to head of a unit/department. The Environmental Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be an Environmental Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. Environmental Regulatory Manager

  • To provide environmental management (anticipating, identifying, and evaluating hazardous conditions and environmental risks) and compliance advice to operational management and staff, ensuring that reasonable care due diligence occurs during the day-to-day operations at all Ontario facilities, and GFL remains aware and protected from risk or liability arising from potential non-compliance issues. Key Accountabilities Ensure Branch Managers and their staff are aware of, and follow, site-specific regulatory requirements. Review (and respond to when necessary) all reports regarding environmental spills or incidents that may occur at Ontario facilities, client sites or during transport. Track all branch regulatory requirements to completion, and undertake action to meet regulatory deadlines and support branches as necessary. Conduct inspections at sites and provide results and recommendations to Branch Managers of actions necessary in order to correct non-compliance issues. Maintain regular contact with all environmental regulating bodies (e.g., Ministry of the Environment, Environment Canada, Transport Canada, municipalities, and industry associations) ensuring GFL remains aware of legislative trends and recent regulatory changes. Prepare applications for permits, and update permits and licenses as required (e.g., site approvals, transport approvals, etc.). Maintain oversight of your assigned Ontario branches in terms of community complaints, potential air emissions, odours, and other waste management issues. Accompany government officials during facility inspections/audits. Manage site-based environmental issues through external means (i.e., third party consultants) when required. Understand and be able to inform Operations on all regulations applicable to Ontario sites. Assist Operations in special assignments. Prepare documentation (e.g., Annual Reports, formal responses/notifications, etc.) for regulatory bodies. All other related duties as assigned. Experience, Qualifications and Education Post-secondary degree, diploma or post-graduate program in a related field (e.g., Chemical/Environmental Engineering/Technology, Environmental Studies, Geography, Chemistry, Environmental Management, etc.). In-depth knowledge and understanding of applicable provincial and federal environmental legislation (e.g., Ontario Regulation 347, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, etc.). Experience with control of hazardous substances, Safety Data Sheets, hazardous waste labeling requirements, and spill reporting and control methods. Skills and Competencies Business acumen, strong analytical skills, strategic thinking abilities, and an understanding of organizational behaviour. Communication skills and the ability to influence others. Ability to work as a member of a team. Strong computer (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), written, oral communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent health and safety track record in programs and processes. Experience in training and educating others. Ability to work independently and capable of forming strong working relationships/partnerships with Site Leadership teams, clients and hourly work force.
