    The Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN) is seeking an experienced and energetic Financial Manager to join our team. The Financial Manager will play a crucial role in providing financial resource functions for IEN. These functions include accounting, financial management and analysis, budget analysis, benefits and risk management.

    The Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN) is an alliance of grassroots Indigenous Peoples whose shared mission is to protect the sacredness of Mother Earth from contamination and exploitation by strengthening, maintaining, and respecting traditional teachings and natural laws. The candidate must be able demonstrate knowledge of Indigenous cultural lifeways, spirituality and values.

    Job Overview

    The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in nonprofit accounting, financial and budget analysis and management, compliance, reporting, budgeting, planning and organizational benefits and risk management. They must have strong written and verbal communication, administrative, organizational skills and the ability to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities.

    The position will report directly to the Director of Operations and will work closely with the Executive Director, Leadership Team and Financial Manager. The position is a full-time salaried position. The preference for this position is to be based in Bemidji, Minnesota, however this position has the option to be remote. Occasional travel to IEN’s Headquarters in Bemidji is expected. All new employees are subject to a 90-day probationary period, whereupon completion of an evaluation will be conducted. Full employment status officially begins upon completion of this probationary period and full benefits will be set up at that time as well.


    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Oversee all financial, projects, programs and grants accounting.

    • Maintain financial records in accordance with accepted accounting practices.
    • Cash flow budgeting and control.
    • Work with the Grants Manager to create proposal budgets, provide financial reports, and maintain robust reporting records for all grants and donations.
    • Work with staff to create and manage program and campaign budgets to provide clear spending guidelines for programmatic work and facilitate adherence to grant compliance and requirements.
    • Prepare revenue and expenditure reports, year-end statements.
    • Monitor grant expenditures, prepare quarterly, year-end, and grant reports as needed.
    • Prepare, analyze and clearly communicate monthly/quarterly/annual financial statements for organization leadership and Board review.
    • Prepare records for annual audit and coordinate the auditing process. Collaborate with external auditors, Leadership Team, Executive Director and Board of Directors to assess and implement better practices and improve operations.
    • Oversee and lead the annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the Director of Operations, the Executive Director, Leadership Team, and designated Program/Campaign Coordinators and Directors.
    • Administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes and keep the Executive Director, Director of Operations and Leadership Team abreast of the organization’s financial status.
    • Ensure financial data and cash flow are steady and support operational requirements.
    • Update and implement all necessary non-profit financial management policies and accounting practices; oversee and enhance the finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual.
    • Onboard with orientation and training of all new employees regarding the automated payroll service and manage employees payroll, wages, tax information, health, all benefits, life and retirement plans.
    • Track and ensure employees and Program Directors/Coordinators/Supervisors are aware and adhere to the IEN personnel policy, employee compensation policies and procedures, fringe benefits, leave categories, time management and timesheet policies, processes for employee status changes and other organizational policies and procedures.
    • Work with the Director of Operations to ensure implementation and manage all benefits packages.
    • Responsible for management of unemployment benefits, COBRA and other benefits associated with termination of employment.

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, business or related field is required. Ideally with an MBA/CPA or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

    • Seven to ten years of overall professional experience; five-plus years of accounting and financial management experience.
    • Ability to analyze, organize and develop financial plans.
    • Proficient in grant management.
    • Ability to translate financial concepts to programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds.
    • Effectively collaborate with organizations, funders, and staff regarding financial needs.
    • Proficient with automated accounting system, word processing, spreadsheets, reporting software, database applications and specifically Quickbooks.
    • A successful track record in setting priorities; Keen analytic, organizational and problem solving skills with the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
    • Excellent communication and relationship-building and team-building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
    • Demonstrate self-awareness, emotional agility, good coping and stress management skills.
    • A multi-tasker with the ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced movement building organization engaged in a social change ecosystem.
    • Demonstrate a positive, courteous, respectful and friendly attitude that would project a positive image of the organization and Indigenous Peoples.
    • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission of the Indigenous Environmental Network.
    • Have experience working with either Indigenous Nations, non-profit Indigenous Peoples Organizations and demonstrate a working knowledge of North American Indigenous lifeways and culture.


    Position Type:
    This is a full-time, salary position.

    Salary:

    The salary range for this position is $62,000- $75,000 and comes with a competitive benefits package. Salary is commensurate with experience, skills, education, and training of the applicant.

    Location:
    The preference for this position is to be based in Bemidji, Minnesota, however this position has the option to be remote. Occasional travel to IEN’s Headquarters in Bemidji, MN is expected.
