Epidemiologist monitors and investigates known or suspected sources and transmission of communicable diseases. Collects, analysis, and interprets disease data using appropriate statistical and research methods. Being an Epidemiologist reviews sterilization, disinfection and waste control techniques and recommends changes as needed. Develops and coordinates effective and practical interventions and procedures to control and prevent disease in the community or facility. Additionally, Epidemiologist typically requires a master's degree of microbiology. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Epidemiologist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.   • The Epidemiologist will support the 24/7 Health Operations Center and Public Health Team to investigate and analyze infectious illnesses, including COVID-19, for the Carnival Corporation’s combined fleets of nine Brands with over 90 ships that carry over 12 million travelers per year and employ over 100,000 crew members.

    They will report illnesses of concern and any disease associations to the Director, Health Operations Center and Director, Public Health and as required, liaise directly with local, regional and national health authorities. In conjunction with the HOC and Director, Public Health, they will plan and direct interventions to prevent and control the spread of communicable illnesses. They will collect and analyze data through clinical record reviews, observations, interviews, surveys and data mining and distribute analytical reports of disease activity to stakeholders. They will assist in the development of public health programs that control communicable diseases by drafting policies and procedures, tracking disease activity, analyzing data, and recommending ways to strengthen programs to improve public health outcomes. They will assist shipboard medical staff with case investigations and contact tracing.

    They will plan and coordinate vaccination campaigns including dissemination of educational material and patient information to maximize vaccination uptake.

    They will regularly monitor public health requirements for cruise ship travelers, including COVID-19 and other illnesses such as Yellow Fever, and communicate requirements and recommendations to stakeholders.

    PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES INCLUDING COVID-19 

    • Provide support and guidance to shipboard medical teams for infectious illnesses such as COVID-19, influenza and noroviruses.
    • Assist the response to infectious illnesses cases and outbreaks of COVID-19, influenza, noroviruses and other illnesses.
    • Investigate infectious illness case reports and determine close contacts using multiple and varied health data and other sources.
    • Communicate, coordinate and collaborate with the HOC team, Director, Public Health, shipboard and shoreside leadership teams, and third parties as necessary, to provide factual assessments and responses to public health events.
    • Communicate and collaborate with health leadership regarding epidemiological analysis and prevention and control of communicable disease outbreaks.
    • Establish strong relationships with regulatory health authorities and determine timely communication channels to facilitate coordinated reporting and response efforts.
    • Monitor national and local public health requirements, restrictions and travel alerts for illnesses such as COVID-19 and Yellow Fever and communicate these to stakeholders.
    • Review relevant and recent scientific reports of infectious illnesses that impact cruise ship travelers and distribute to internal health teams communicating any identified risks and providing actionable solutions.
    • Collect, analyze and distribute health data in a clear and organized manner that reflects disease activity to the relevant audience
    • Use health analytics to determine disease associations and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.
      Identify business risks of a public health nature and communicate these risks to management and internal stakeholders. 
    • Collaborate with analytics team to develop new ways to capture and represent data through dashboards
      Collaborate with health IT team to enhance SeaCare® electronic health record system functionality to capture and automate disease reporting

    PUBLIC HEALTH PROGRAMS

    • Evaluate, develop, and improve both public health surveillance and epidemiologic investigation processes and systems for COVID-19 and other communicable diseases.
    • Collaborate with health teams to develop public health policies and procedures that strengthen public health programs to mitigate infectious illnesses
    • Monitor proposed and existing Company programs that have public health implications and follow-up with a sense of urgency, accountability, and ownership on assigned public health programs.
    • Coordinate vaccination campaigns that maximize vaccination uptake of COVID-19, influenza, measles and yellow fever.
    • Assisting fleet operations in preventing and controlling infectious diseases, including imminent public health threats, by monitoring scientific and health information and advising management.
    • Creating health alerts and advisories as appropriate.
    • Assisting in the development of public health policies and procedures by identifying gaps in policies and operations and providing practicable recommendations.
    • Communicate relevant medical and public health policy and procedures to the Fleet and obtain feedback on implementation and effectiveness.
