    Reports To : Operations Supervisor

    FLSA Status : Non-Exempt

    POSITION Summary :

    The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible of operating a variety of heavy equipment that perform the loading, unloading, spreading and pushing of general debris in a safe and effective manner to minimize the risk of injury and property damage.

    Heavy equipment may include front-end loaders, excavators with attachments, forklift, grinder and other pieces of equipment.

    Duties and Responsibilities include the following :

    • Operate various pieces of large equipment in tight areas with limited spacing including low ceiling clearance.
    • Willingness to operate heavy equipment for long periods with continuous attention to detail and safety.
    • Must possess skill, coordination and awareness to operate heavy equipment in a safe manner with precision and efficiency.
    • Ensure proper operation of equipment by performing regular checks on their functionality
    • Maintain consistent communication among equipment operators and traffic controllers by use of radio to maximize efficiencies and safety.
    • Regularly clean equipment to have a clear vision through all windows and mirrors at all times.
    • Must be able to recognize mechanical issues with all equipment and report needs for repairs utilizing fleet software.
    • Must be able to recognize hazardous material and report them to ground support.
    • Must be able to safely and efficiently operate excavator with grapple attachment, magnet attachment, concrete pulverize attachment, wood shear attachment to load and unload material from trucks and to load sort line infeed as well as horizontal wood grinder.
    • Must be able to safely and efficiently operate front end loaders to load semi walking floors, semi end dump, roll off trucks and customer owned vehicles with various materials, push the general debris across tip floor into segregated piles and load the sort line infeed as well as horizontal wood grinder.
    • Must be able to safely operate forklift to load, unload or relocate materials within the weight capacity of the lift.
    • Must be able to utilize on board scales to maximize payloads on out bound loads.
    • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and provide supporting documentation.
    • Commit to the overall safety of the work environment by always taking extra precautions to work with the utmost care and consideration of other vehicles, employees, and customers that may be walking, driving or working on the floor.
    • Abide by all local, state, and federal regulations, as well as all company safety procedures.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :

    QUALIFICATIONS :

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE :

    • 3 years of experience working with heavy equipment.
    • Knowledge of proper operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.
    • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills are essential for collaborating with others, communicating and speaking to supervisors, employees and customers.
    • Keen attention to detail and situational awareness to maintain the safety of the work environment.
    • Available to work six days per week (Monday Saturday). Normal start time 5 : 30 a.m. however flexible hours required.
    • Ability to maintain, inspect, and clean pieces of heavy equipment.
    • Work well with team, but work with minimum supervision.
    • Ability to multi-task and adapt in a fast paced environment.
    • Bilingual English & Spanish.

    EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE :

    Less than high school education; and minimum three (3) years of equipment operator experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    Class C drivers license preferred

    LANGUAGE SKILLS :

    Ability to read and write English, interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

    Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. They should also be able to speak English effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS :

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

    Ability to compute rate, ratios, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

    REASONING ABILITY :

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

    While performing the duties of this job t he employee is required to sit for long periods of time and constantly bend at the neck and waist, twist at the neck and waste, grasp (simple and power) and push and pull.

    use of hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently must climb and use fine manipulation of hands.

    The employee must regularly lift and / or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision
