Estate Planning Director directs all aspects of the estate planning function including sales, staffing, and supervision. Participates in training and estate planning workshops. Being an Estate Planning Director ensures that the agency stays abreast of regulatory guidelines and new trends in the field. Researches and advises on tax, technical, and legal questions. Additionally, Estate Planning Director introduces new life products to the field and contributes to design of related software and tools. May be a speaker at insurance conferences or meetings. Requires a bachelor's degree of business, marketing, or mathematics. Typically reports to top management. May require Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU). The Estate Planning Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be an Estate Planning Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Primary Responsibilities: 

    • Working collaboratively as part of a team.
    • Collaborating with clients to develop strategies designed to meet specific goals
    • Drafting and reviewing legal documents such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney and healthcare directives
    • Conducting legal research on estate planning laws, regulations, and precedents
    • Counseling clients on wealth preservation, tax planning and asset protection strategies
    • Assisting with probate and estate administration processes
    • Representing clients in negotiations, mediations or court proceedings related to estate matters
    • Business development, including professional organization involvement and writing.
    • Supervising paralegals, staff, and team members as your role progresses.  

     

    Required Skills/Abilities:

    • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to communicate complex matters concisely and effectively in oral and written form.
    • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and client service skills.
    • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines and ability to delegate.
    • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite

     

    Required Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
    • Successful passing of the bar exam
    • Active member in good standing of the Bar or currently eligible to become licensed, to practice law in Iowa. 
    • 2-5 years of relevant experience in estate planning, including drafting wills, trusts and other estate planning documents, as well as advising clients on estate and trust administration matters.
    • Strong work ethic, drive, keen attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a small team environment.

     

    Preferred Experience:

    • 3-7 years of specific estate planning experience.
    • Excellent academic and professional credentials.

     

    Physical Requirements:

    • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
    • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
