Extrusion Operator, Sr. sets up and operates an extrusion machine in accordance with established procedures, guidelines, and customer requirements. Reads and interprets blueprints and diagrams to select, position, and secure machinery. Being an Extrusion Operator, Sr. adjusts and cleans machines. Documents work performed as required. Additionally, Extrusion Operator, Sr. may have to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Extrusion Operator, Sr. works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.     Shift: Monday-Thursday

    Job Summary

    This position is an introduction to plastic extrusion for those with no experience and has the possibility of promotion to the next level after 6 months. The objective of this position is to receive an introduction to the skills required to become a high-level operator. Learn to complete paperwork accurately and legibly, assist in the setup and teardown of lines, package parts per customer’s expectations, assist in keeping the line running and producing parts per specs assigned by the customer. Learn to make safety top priority and consistently use proper PPE.

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Daily attendance and being on time is mandatory.
    • Will be working with and around the following equipment: (this list is an example of the equipment that maybe used and is not intended as a complete list of equipment that could potentially be used.)
    • Extruders and co-extruders
    • Electric saws
    • Handsaws and hand cutters
    • Hot dies
    • Pullers
    • Water tanks filled with non-potable water
    • Fly knives
    • Pneumatic tools (i.e. nail guns)
    • Able to lift and position 5-15 lb. dies on stationary bolts located from waist to chest height.
    • Able to read an instruction book written in English to determine the equipment and parts needed and the specs required by the customer.

    o Fill hopper (lifting a 25 lb. bucket to a height of 6 feet)

    • PRODUCE PARTS:

    Learn to complete paperwork accurately, legibly and completely.

    • CLEAN:

    Keep area clean and free of debris, water, slip and trip hazards. Keep the ends of lines unblocked for emergency exits.

    Keep electrical panels, fire extinguishers, and exits unblocked.

    • TEARDOWN LINE:

    Report any equipment issues and/or damage to supervisor. Return equipment to proper area.

    • TRAINING:

    Learn to read a tape measure with accuracy. Learn to read calipers with accuracy.

    Learn to use hand tools, i.e. hammers, nail guns, staple guns, wrenches, tape guns, etc... Complete all extrusion training with trainer.

    Complete training with quality department.

    Complete training with maintenance department. Complete training with tooling department.

    Complete training with distribution department.

    Complete training on job appropriate personal protective equipment and demonstrate consistent use of that equipment.

    Training on equipment specific safety features. Work with others to learn new jobs.

    Qualifications

    Ability to count and do basic math problems.

    Ability to learn to read a tape measure and calipers. Ability to read and write.

    Capable of communicating effectively with others regarding transferring information. Able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

    Attention to detail is important. Capable of problem solving.

    Experience in plastic extrusion is not required.

    Working conditions

    This job involves shift work and you may be working days, evenings, or nights. There is a possibility of mandatory working of weekends and holidays, as needed. This is manufacturing work in an unheated, non-air conditioned warehouse.

    Physical requirements

    This job will require the candidate to be able to walk and stand on concrete floors for 8 hours. It will be necessary to be able to lift 25 lbs. to a level of 6 feet, frequently during the shift. The job will also entail a lot of bending, stooping, twisting, crouching, walking up and down stairs, lifting of 25-30 lbs. frequently and manual dexterity.
