    DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

    The Center for Agroecology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) maintains more than thirty acres of land for organic crop production, research, education and outreach. This land and associated facilities have been in operation for over 50 years and serve as the primary classroom for a diverse range of hands-on programming that spans academic, research and community programs. This includes research and education programs for the Environmental Studies department, Agroecology major, research and education programs serving multiple campus divisions, co-curricular student engagement opportunities, the Apprenticeship Program, short courses and community workshops. The CfA also serves as a public demonstration site open daily for use by university students, K-12 students and the general public.

    The CfA's mission is to advance agroecology and equitable food systems through experiential education, participatory research, agricultural extension and public service. UCSC is a Hispanic Serving Institution with R1 research standing, one of only 25 campuses nationwide and it is imperative that the incumbent has the capacity to integrate diversity, equity and inclusion into all aspects of CfA work and programming.

    JOB SUMMARY

    Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Finance, Development and Operations the Facilities Maintenance Worker will support the functioning of the CfA farm, gardens and facilities project planning and implementation through facilities maintenance, rodent control and project prioritization. The incumbent will apply campus policies and procedures to resolve a variety of facilities maintenance issues. Works on a variety of facilities maintenance problems. Works closely with the Division of Social Sciences Director of Research Facilities and Operations and divisional staff to support capital project implementation.

    Salary Information: Salary Range: $27.58 - $30.44 / Hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

    JOB DUTIES

    65% - Facilities Maintenance
    • Assists management in development of annual facilities budget.
    • Purchases supplies, conduct bid proposals and supervises or performs small-scale unit renovation projects, rodent control and general maintenance.
    • Reviews facility project drawings or plans and reports building need compliance, errors or omissions to management, organization personnel and outside contractors.

    15% - Building and Project Coordination
    • Works with management to support departmental oversight of capital improvement projects with Capital Projects. Works with onsite contractors.
    • Act as Building Coordinator for organization emergency / disaster preparedness for assigned venues, serves as the communication liaison between organization service agencies and building occupants.
    • Maintaining accurate records of all access control activities, oversees issuing and replacing keys and recovering department keys from departing personnel, reporting any failure to recover access control keys to department management and UCPD, and securely storing unassigned keys in the department UCPD-approved cabinets.
    • Conducts regular periodic rounds to inspect areas for security, fire and accident hazards and takes appropriate action as required, including reporting infractions of fire and building codes, building rules and other building irregularities to management.

    15% - Operational Coordination
    • Coordinates maintenance and repair of departmental fleet vehicles and equipment.
    • Acts as representative of organization safety committee, building emergency committee and ergonomic program, maintaining departmental compliance with OSHA / EH&S regulations regarding state and organization policy. Maintain Pesticide Applicator License for the Center and compliance.
    • Acts as department equipment coordinator through the equipment tracking system(s) and conducts department inventory controls, including processing and maintaining records of equipment insurance requests.

    5% - Other Duties
    • Performs basic office skills, including using email, keeps appropriate records, maintains files and keeps computer files updated and organized for coordination.
    • Attends Center staff meetings.


    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Working knowledge of practices and procedures relating to facility maintenance.
    • Written communication skills to prepare a variety of correspondence, reports, policies and procedures, and training documents.
    • Skills to work under pressure of deadlines in a stressful environment.
    • Active listening, interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills to effectively resolve questions, concerns, issues or problems and ensure cooperative and productive working relationships.
    • Skills to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Working organizational skills to work on multiple projects with competing deadlines, to establish goals and work load priorities, and to meet project deadlines within budget and time constraints.
    • Working knowledge of practices and procedures of safety and emergency preparedness.
    • Experience and knowledge of the techniques and kills for a range of skilled trades including but not limited to: carpentry, plumbing, irrigation, electrical, HVAC.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • One year experience as a Building Maintenance Worker.


    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
    • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
    • Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
    • Ability to perform work in a rugged physical environment and inclement weather with challenging infrastructure requirements.
    • Poison Oak is present. Incumbent must be willing to take the measures required to work in contact with and cut/remove poison oak.
    • Ability to do occasional work in confined spaces such as attics and trenches while bending, stooping and/or kneeling with the possibility of being exposed to live electrical circuits and machinery.
    • Ability to successfully work with and around a variety of fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides.
    • Ability to perform vertebrate pest control such as trapping, baiting, or other types of rodent control.
    • Ability to sustain exposure to dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities.
    • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary in storing and moving materials. The ability to lift light to moderate objects up to 40 lbs., with or without accommodation.
    • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
    • Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
    • Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
    • Ability to work overtime including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs, and work an alternate work schedule shift as required.
    • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
    • Ability to work safely in areas where hazardous materials are present or stored.
    • Ability to wear a respirator in accordance with the California Code of Regulations Title 8, 5144.
    • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
