    Brief Summary of Job Duties

    Under the general direction from the Department Chair, the AASC Director and the direct supervision of the Director of Art Labs, is responsible for the management, supervision, operation, maintenance and development of the Department of Art print, and mStudio labs. Utilizes advanced knowledge of tools, equipment and processes to provide technical supervision, develop experimental processes, provide assistance to students and faculty with research and projects, maintain materials and equipment and manage student lab monitors and Independent study students.

    Under the direct supervision of the Director of Art Labs, is responsible for the full range of physical program management functions necessary for the conduct of the teaching and research missions of the Department; including the functional management of the facility's operations. The position requires a person who can interface effectively with faculty, researchers, students, and campus safety/business/facilities/equipment/space entities. Ensures that physical program activities are in accordance with campus policy, local, state, and federal laws and regulations.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree in related area or equivalent experience and/or training.
    • 1-3 years experience with 2D Digital imaging and printmaking.
    • Ability to understand and apply University and Department policies and procedures to specific situations.
    • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks.
    • Able to observe and use safe working conditions.
    • Communication - An ability to communicate verbally, graphically, and in writing.
    • Organization - Organizational abilities including maintaining a timeline and schedule for all manner of activities in the overseen classrooms and labs including research projects, class projects, workshops, demonstrations, presentations, utilization and maintenance of equipment and facilities, student volunteer scheduling and duties.
    • Accounting - Relevant knowledge and abilities to create, develop, and track inventory and recordkeeping.
    • Printmaking - Working knowledge of printmaking processes and affording techniques. Working knowledge and ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, consult, purchase, upgrade and repair all printmaking and artists’ books equipment.
    • 2D/Digital imaging - Working knowledge of Digital imaging, design and publication.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • At least 1-3 years experience or combination of experience, training and education, preferably in a school or business setting.

    Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

    35% Print & mStudio Instruction and Development

    Oversees the day to day activities in the print studio. Keeps lab clean, maintained and organized. Keeps apprised of new technologies and has a solid understanding of current developments in analog/digital image making and design and printmaking fields. Assists faculty in the research and development of experimental processes and techniques in these fields. Provides group and individual technical training and instruction to faculty, students and staff in the design and creation of projects, safe operation, and maintenance of printmaking tools and equipment. Independently organizes and coordinates classroom training workshops, demonstrations, and in class project work sessions from development to execution. Provides user support for access to Risograph. Provides support to students in the facility and consults with faculty regarding services provided. Maintains, troubleshoots and fixes malfunctions, coordinates with repair professionals when necessary. Performs necessary service, repairs and modification of equipment including Risograph, letterpresses, etching presses, guillotine, boardshear, paper cutters, and photopolymer platemaker.

    Print Lab: The Print Lab is equipped to specialize in hybrid digital and analog printmaking techniques employed in a broad range of contemporary artistic practices. It features two letterpress machines, an Anderson & Vreeland photopolymer platemaker, wooden type, 3 intaglio presses, a two-color Risograph MF9450, large scale paper cutters, a guillotine, a classroom, and materials store. The Print Lab is dedicated to traditional and experimental printing procedures incorporating digital elements such as laser cut intaglio and relief plates, and 3D printed type, into traditional analog craftsmanship

    10% Purchasing/Distribution of Supplies/Inventory

    Independently and in coordination with faculty, responsible for managing the purchasing and distribution of supplies and inventory for the Print Lab and mStudio. Purchases operational supplies and materials for equipment (i.e. printmaking presses, inkjet printers), for classroom use, and for advanced faculty research and student projects. Keeps inventory for the lab.

    Operates a store of essential materials that are not practical for individuals to acquire themselves. This includes sourcing, purchasing, tracking inventory, sales and accounting.

    In collaboration with instructors and the department financial affairs officer, tracks accounts related to the lab to keep budgets balanced and plan responsible spending. Manages a print tracking system and a supply of print and book making materials and collects payment for corresponding fees from students.

    10% Coordinate & Assist

    Work closely with faculty and students (particularly grads and honors) on fabrication and installation of art projects, advises and coordinates outdoor art projects and installations, help problem solve art related issues and generally is available to help when special needs arise. Work closely with students to assure best use of studio space. Help with student run gallery. Monitor activities of students (majors/minors/graduate) outside of class meeting times.

    25% Facilities Management

    Manages Art Department's fabrication and research facilities. Assesses projects such as design and fabrication, fabrication and repair of research and instructional equipment and facilities, and periodic maintenance of equipment and facilities. Renovates instruction or research facilities, installs new equipment or relocates existing equipment, determines equipment utility requirements, and develops modifications to facilities. Is knowledgeable of UC policies and general building practices regarding alterations and additions to facilities. Reviews equipment and materials requests by department staff and faculty. In collaboration with the chair, director, research coordinator and the department space committee determines if and what funding is available for specific requests, advises financial staff in review of and categorization, expense tracking and reporting. Tracks department equipment and compiles yearly inventory of tagged department property. Arranges for pickup of any excess department inventory. Arranges for and completes necessary EIMR paperwork for the sales of excess department equipment. Makes recommendations and arranges for the purchase of furniture for office and lab use. Responsible for fabrication of furniture when no suitable alternative is available. Serves on the Art Department Space Committee. Reports on general department lab, studio, and office use; keeps records of space use including: square footage, activity, occupants, and access. Makes recommendations to space committee on department space issues.

    Apprises faculty and staff of university policies and procedures affecting the labs. Acts as liaison between the offices of Environmental Health & Safety, Equipment Management and Facilities Management.

    Reports lost and/or damaged equipment in need of replacement or repair to area faculty or supervisor.

    Responsible for usage and dispensing of chemicals for print which include inks and solvents. Must be appraised of current university policies and procedures with respect to health and safety. Recommends and implements health and safety procedures which are related to these materials and supplies.

    Facilities duties include routine maintenance of ART spaces i.e. Walls (spackle and paint), Floors (clean), Ceilings (lights)... Supervisor will assign additional tasks as needed.

    Primary Areas Covered: classrooms, gallery, offices, Harder Stadium, honors studios, aiding faculty in their offices/studios, print facility, mstudio, former paper making spaces, outside and in.

    10% Space Management

    Analyzes space usage and assignments within the Art Department. Develops short and long-term plans, makes recommendations for reassignment of space. Maintains accurate space drawings and inventory of space. Coordinates annual temporary space for all faculty, staff, students and researchers. Provides data regarding available space and department requirements to Chair; implements decisions to move personnel from locations as needed. Coordinates and schedules moves ensures research and instructional functions are not adversely affected. Provides follow up for all moving issues; resolves problems and issues related to temporary space. Provides analysis to Chair of existing space utilization and advises him/her regarding short- and long-range space requirements to meet current and projected teaching, administrative and research needs.

    Manage keys, clean-ups (from students or visitors - trash, incomplete de-install, urine/biohazards, office kitchen?), furniture set ups everywhere (with other tech help) tool and supplies acquisition and pick up from central stores help students install and de-install temporary public art around the art building, help students and faculty with permissions for public art, back up for other techs (repair and maintenance of tools and furniture, sub for absences) knowledge of all machinery in print, woodshop, metal shop, kilns, (excluding 3D digital fab lab) downstairs hallway lockers space committee member yearly clear out and painting of Harder Stadium studios and Honors studios locking and unlocking spaces? (was done pre-Covid, but don’t know about now) hazardous waste disposal pick up from UCSB FM

    5% Maintenance

    Maintenance of ART equipment in addition to assisting other ARTS technicians with the maintenance of all equipment.

    5% Safety Coordination

    Oversees facilities security and access. Works in conjunction with faculty and staff to implement proper access and access procedures for department labs and studios. Responsible for the issue and record keeping of university and department keys. Responsible for the Art Department safety communication program. Consultants with Environmental Health and Safety to ensure compliance to campus, local, state, and federal safety regulations and laws. Works in conjunction with lab staff in wood shop, metal shop, foundry, sculpture, computer, photo and print labs to maintain a safe and functioning work environment. Provides safety training and consultation to faculty, staff, and students when necessary. Serves as department safety representative to Environmental Health and Safety. Attends bi-yearly DSR training sessions at EH&S. Is direct contact for police, fire dept., facilities, the college of letters and science, etc. in case of emergency
