    Compensation:

    • In accordance with California law, the expected salary range for this position is posted with this position.  The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.

     

    Role Summary

    In a summer residential camp setting, the Direct Support Camp Counselor provides direct one-on-one care and supervision for a special needs camper who is blind, visually impaired, and multi-handicapped.

    Please Note : This seasonal position will begin on June 8th, 2023 and end on July 30th, 2023.

    • Provides daily living skills instruction and physical assistance with tasks including but not limited to tooth brushing, showering, dressing, bed-making, toilet training, toileting, eating, laundry, and more.
    • Attend mandatory camp staff meetings.
    • Wear a clean staff t-shirt while on duty.
    • Assist campers with organizing their personal belongings.
    • Assist in emergency camp procedures.
    • Assist with pick-up and drop-off of campers on arrival and departure day.
    • Meet with camper’s parents to talk on the phone to discuss child’s needs.
    • Meet with supervisor to effectively plan and implement daily activities.
    • Follow and enforce policies and safety measures with other staff members and campers in that activity.
    • Assist in developing campers’ objectives to ensure assigned camper needs are met.
    • Completely written reports in a timely manner.
    • Manage personal time off within the Camp Policy.
    • Set a good example for campers and staff including punctuality, cleanliness, clean up, table manners, closing of camp, etc.
    • Maintain confidentiality of all pertinent information to ensure assigned camper’s rights are protected.
    • Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis throughout camp.
    • Assist in all other activity and living areas as needed by the Lead Camp Counselor.
    • Communicate with the daily with supervisor Counselor to express any concerns, ideas, special maintenance needs, or safety hazards
    • Sit with and interact with your assigned cabin during meals.
    • Participate, conduct, and complete all requirements for the outcomes for each camper.
    • Provide for the safety and well-being of assigned camper.
    • Ensure assigned camper leaves the program with all their personal belongings.
    • Ensures that assigned camper maintains a high level of personal hygiene daily.
    • Instruct cabin group in emergency procedures such as fire drills, earthquakes, and emergency evacuation of camp.
    • Carry out established roles for supervising camper health, diet, medications, hygiene, etc.
    • Carry out established roles in enforcing safety at all times.
    • Follow and implement the camp’s goals, policies, and schedules at all times.
    • Communicate emergencies such as a sick or hurt camper immediately to supervisor and nurse.

    Qualifications


    • High school diploma
    • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
    • Current CPR, First Aid, AED certification preferred.
    • Meet all health screening, drug testing, and background investigation clearances, as well as possess a valid driver’s license (if applicable), insurance and have an acceptable DMV record
    • Applicants must demonstrate evidence of a negative PCT test (taken within 72 hours) before the camp start date
    • Must be able to lift to 30 pounds
    • At least one year of supervisory experience 
    • Ability to oversee and supervise small and large groups in camp and cabin activities
    • Prior resident camp experience is desirable 
    • Desire to work with children, teens, and adults who are blind, visually impaired, and multi-disabled
