Equipment Mechanic II

  • Join our team as a skilled Equipment Mechanic II! Under general supervision, you will maintain and repair a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment; and perform related duties as required.
     
    We are accepting applications to fill two (2) full time Equipment Mechanic II vacancies in the Resource Recovery & Waste Management Division (RRWMD) of the Public Works Department in Santa Barbara, at the South Coast Recycling Transfer Station and at the Tajiguas Landfill.   
     
    NOTE: The County may provide reimbursement for reasonable relocation expenses, and, at the discretion of the CEO, can provide flexible relocation assistance, housing and student loan offsets, cash incentives, and/or vacation and sick leave pre-accruals in the interest of attracting the best talent to the organization.
     
    Although the incumbent will be assigned a home base location, the position may require regular travel throughout the County. Candidates should be available to travel for the position based on the needs of the department.
     
    The Resource Recovery and Waste Management Division will provide the necessary equipment tools and required training to be successful at the position.
     
    We are also accepting applications to establish employment lists for future Full-Time, Part-Time, Civil Service Rule 1414* and Extra-Help Equipment Mechanic vacancies at All Locations.
     
    CSR 1414*: Position vacated as a leave of absence (CSR 1414) and the duration of the appointment shall be subject to the return of the individual who is on a leave. A person appointed to the position under CSR 1414 may be able to transition into a regular position in the classification without re-application or re-testing, depending on the performance of the appointee and the needs of the department.

    • Three years of skilled experience in repairing motor vehicles or heavy equipment, including two years of experience repairing diesel-powered heavy equipment; OR,
    • Three years of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Equipment Mechanic I or Automotive Mechanic I with Santa Barbara County; OR,
    • A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
     
    Additional Qualifications:  Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License upon appointment. Possession of a valid California Class A Driver's License within three months of appointment.
     
    Note - A California Class A Commercial Driver's license must be kept valid and maintained as a condition of continued employment.
     
    Once an incumbent has obtained the Class A license, they will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs prior to being assigned work requiring such a license; once assigned, incumbents will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis.
     
    Knowledge of:  principles and practices of repair and preventive maintenance of motor vehicles and light and heavy construction equipment; tools and equipment used in making mechanical repairs; gas and arc welding; safe work practices.
     
    Ability to:  organize and schedule work; instruct others in repair methods and equipment; follow instructions; keep records; learn electronic diagnostic methods and equipment; learn to use an automated recordkeeping system; use a computer keyboard.WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Incumbents in this class perform most work outdoors, may be required to work in awkward positions, and may be exposed to hazards such as diesel exhaust.
     
    SELECTION PROCESS:
    • Review applications and supplemental questionnaire to determine those applicants who meet the employment standards.
    • Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking. Responses to the required supplemental questionnaire will be evaluated and scored. Candidates' final score and rank on the eligibility list will be determined by their responses to the supplemental questionnaire. This process may be eliminated if there are fewer than 11 qualified applicants. Do not enter "see resume" or "see application" when responding to supplemental questions as raters will not have access to any information except what you enter in the box for each required supplemental question. Although you may have some of this information on your application, you will need to answer the questions completely for this section.
    Applicants must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the Supplemental Questionnaire to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established, all candidates will receive written notice of their score on the exam(s), rank on the employment list, and exact duration of the employment list.
     
    Conditional Job Offer:  Once on a conditional offer of employment has been made, candidate will be required to successfully complete a background check, which includes a conviction history check, and satisfactory reference checks.  Appointee will be subject to a post-offer medical evaluation or examination.
