    GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

    The State Auditor's Office, a legislative agency that serves as the independent auditor for Texas state government, is seeking qualified individuals to intern in a temporary position from June to August 2024.  Under the supervision of a project manager or senior team members, an intern performs work that introduces the student to entry level professional auditing, advisory work, and/or research work in executive, legislative, and judicial agencies, state-supported institutions of higher education, and other entities that receive state funding. Detailed instructions regarding specific duties are provided at the beginning of the assignment. Work is closely supervised and reviewed for accuracy throughout the internship.

    EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

    Performs work as assigned by the project manager or senior team members. Examples of work may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Performs research pertaining to audit or advisory topics, legislation, or related issues
    • Prepares written documentation on work performed
    • Uses automated systems for working papers, word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications
    • Assists in verifying information contained within an organization’s records
    • Assists in collecting and analyzing data on an organization’s operations
    • Assists in verifying compliance with state and/or federal guidelines and requirements
    • Performs related duties as assigned

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Must be currently enrolled in one of the following (copy of transcript required): (1) undergraduate degree program in accounting, finance, economics, or business administration; OR (2) graduate degree program in accounting, business administration, economics, public administration, mathematics, health care administration, social services, planning, or related field.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

    • Skill in effective oral communications 
    • Skill in writing in a clear and concise manner
    • Skill in effectively working in team environment
    • Skill in using standard business software programs, including Word and Excel to prepare reports, memos, summaries, and analyses; basic level typing skills required
    • Ability to gather, identify, and analyze accurate and relevant audit findings and recommendations

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Undergraduates: completion of at least 90 semester hours of undergraduate course work (with at least nine semester hours of upper division accounting course work, including completion of an auditing course)
    • Graduate students: completion of at least 24 semester hours of graduate course work
    • GPA of 3.0 or higher in major course work
