Director of Finance
Summary/Purpose of Position: In this position, the Director of Finance will plan, organize, supervise, and direct the daily operations and activities of the Finance & Administration Department, ensuring compliance with applicable policies and procedures. This person will also provide leadership, direction and support to the accounting staff, and guidance and information to management staff. The Director of Finance oversees and directs all finance duties, responsibilities, and functions.
Specific/Mandatory Responsibilities: The essential responsibilities of the Director of Finance include but are not limited to the following:
- Manage all finance and accounting activities and functions including payroll, accounts payable, cash management, financial reporting, budgeting, procurement, and inventory.
- Establish, improve, and enforce accounting policies and operating procedures in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Maintain current knowledge and understanding of non-profit accounting and tax regulations, laws, industry trends, practices; establish all necessary financial policies and procedures, and ensure compliance with these throughout the company.
- Ensure records and systems are maintained according to state and federal standards and regulations.
- Develop, analyze and make recommendations relating to accounting and financial data processing systems to ensure effective and efficient financial operations.
- Lead preparation of audits and tax filings, working closely with external auditors.
- Manage and sustain positive, constructive and helpful relationships with auditors, finance staff, department directors, vendors, customers and suppliers.
- Recommend and assist Board of Directors in selection of outside auditors, manage the relationship, and ensure that recommendations from auditors are implemented in a timely manner.
- Maintain a working relationship with banks and financial institutions, including oversight of all banking activities and efficient management of funds.
- Implement continuous financial controls and systems to monitor the performance of the company, its flow of funds, adherence to the budget, expenditures, income, cost of sales and other budgetary items.
- Analyze data to provide accurate background for financial and project planning, strategic planning and for financial forecasting purposes
- Develop and maintain systems of internal controls to safeguard financial assets of the organization.
- Advise on status of short and long-range financial goals.
- Prepare as-needed analyses for cross-departmental and global projects.
- Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and yearend financial statements.
- Review contracts, analyze the cost of new programs and proposed ventures.
- Compile and present various financial reports to the Management Team and the Board of Directors at their scheduled meetings.
- Lead and assist departments in the preparation of their annual budgets and Capital Expenditure Plans.
- Manage departmental employee development, training, performance reviews, salary administration, daily coaching and feedback, goal setting and performance management.
- Ensure finance team is trained and possesses necessary resources in order to have a high-performing team.
- Serve on the executive Management Team as an active and productive member.
- Adhere to the Management’s Code of Conduct and the Employee Manual.
- Oversee, with Human Resources Director, Fossil Rim’s Insurance Plans as well as Employee Benefit Programs through third parties that include Health, 401K programs.
- Oversee Property & Risk policies.
- Maintain the Financial Policy and Procedures Manual, ensuring it remains in step with the Board’s Governance Policy Document and the Employee Manual.
- Develop cash flow forecasting and maintain a long-term cash forecast.
- Review and provide input on contracts and other documents that have a financial impact on the organization.
- Carry out other tasks as required.
- Attend meetings, seminars, conventions, and workshops toward CPEs and involvement with the AZA.
- Attend all Management Team meetings and Board functions as required.
Professional Qualifications Required/ Desired:
- Knowledge of non-profit accounting in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Ability to create and assess financial statements and budgets.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Director of Finance or Controller.
- A BS or BBA in Accounting or Finance; CPA or CMA desired.
- Must show strong time management, project management, & prioritization skills.
- Analytical mind and extremely accurate and detail oriented.
- High-level mathematical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to supervise and evaluate staff effectively.
- Ability to work in fast-changing environment with diverse individuals and groups.
- Advanced knowledge of Excel and a demonstrated knowledge of accounting software, preferably QuickBooks Enterprise and Paycor.
- Communicate effectively in both written and verbal form.
- Regular and dependable attendance is required.
Work Requirements:
Usually a 5-day work week, often requiring flexibility and ability to work weekends and holidays.
Be available for after-hours and weekend call out in emergencies.
