    Classification: Hourly; non-exempt

    Attendance at HIPAA and compliance educational programs is a requirement of employment.

    SUMMARY:

    The Financial Counselor provides support to patients in need of financial assistance and completion of all required forms and applications. Also informs patients of financial responsibility when eligible for reduced rates.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Serves as “new patient” initial facilitator.
    • Conducts reduced rate appointments for indigent and underinsured patients.
    • Coordinates the provision of services provided to the patient/client including scheduling appointments in the EHR.
    • Works with all Departments to assure integration of financial counseling into the clinical care areas.
    • Call uninsured or underinsured patients who may qualify for health benefits to discuss possible benefit options and to offer assistance where needed.
    • Works as a resource to other clinic staff.
    • Cross-Trains in other areas of office procedures.
    • Attends training / seminars necessary to stay current with eligibility guidelines.
    • Travels when necessary to meet operational needs.
    • Maintains strictest confidentiality in regard to business, patient and employee information.
    • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

    • High school diploma or equivalent, associate degree preferred.
    • Prior experience with sliding scale services or collections experience in a hospital, physician’s office or clinic preferred.
    • A working knowledge of income verification and calculation of eligibility for reduced rates
    • A valid Ohio Driver’s License and auto insurance with an acceptable driving record. Reliable transportation.
    • Possess a strong desire to carry out and promote the mission and vision of Lifecare.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

    • Possesses knowledge and understanding regarding healthcare services on sliding fee scales
    • Ability to Annualize wage information for eligibility determination.
    • Possesses knowledge of basic computer programs (Microsoft Office Suite)
    • Knowledge in payment or medical collections.
    • Strong interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to recognize areas for improvement and ability to problem solve.
    • Ability to prioritize assignments and responsibilities to ensure compliance with established deadlines and protocols.
    • Basic understanding of HIPAA rules and regulations.
    • Effective oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to work with persons from a wide diversity of social, ethnic and economic backgrounds is necessary.
    • Ability to distinguish letters and symbols as well as the ability to utilize telephones, computer terminals, fax machines, and copiers is required.
    • Must have reliable transportation.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    • Must be willing to submit to post offer, pre-employment physical examination/medical history check if requested.
    • May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
    • CCC will provide Hepatitis A/B vaccinations; candidate may decline vaccinations in writing or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
    • A pre-employment background investigation may be required.
    • BLS certification within 90 days of employment.

    WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

    Prolonged sitting or standing may be required. Those physical movements and the degree of mobility, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination normally associated with clerical duties in a clinic office setting will be performed on a repetitive basis. This also includes bending, twisting, reaching, lifting, pulling, pushing, and walking. The ability to sustain moderate physical activity, handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds, and standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day is expected. The ability to distinguish letters and symbols as well as the ability to utilize telephones, computer terminals, fax machines, and copiers is required. Working under stressful conditions as well as irregular hours may be required.
