Law Financial Aid and Admissions Counselor

    The Law Financial Aid and Admissions Counselor reports to the Assistant Dean for Law Admissions and Financial Aid. The Law Financial Aid and Admissions Counselor is responsible for providing admissions and financial aid counseling to prospective, entering, and continuing students. This position will award federal financial aid and assist with the awarding of School of Law scholarships. This position will review applications for admission and will represent the School of Law at recruiting events.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Award financial aid

    a. Awards financial aid to law students, with a primary focus on entering students.
    b. Determines the types and amounts of financial aid awarded through the packaging process according to federal methodology and institutional policies.
    c. Assists Assistant Director of Law Financial Aid with the coordination of batch awarding of federal financial aid with University Financial Aid Office, with primary responsibility for entering students.
    d. Monitors individual student awards, and resolves data conflicts and overawards.
    e. Documents all aid adjustments.
    f. Reviews appeals for additional aid, and uses professional judgement to adjust financial aid awards as allowed per federal and institutional policies.
    g. Runs and reviews reports to help ensure accurate and timely awarding and disbursement of aid to eligible students.
    h. Assigns electronic communications/notifications to students.

    2. Administer Federal and Private Loans
    a. Administers federal and private student loan programs in accordance with federal/state financial aid regulations, program guidelines issued by the U.S. Department of Education, and established institutional policies and procedures.
    b. Assists with the management of Federal Direct application approvals and denials and all actions required for processing.
    c. Assists with the management of all private education loan funds including certification with lender, awarding, and disbursement.
    d. Reviews students who are close to or at federal loan aggregate limits and subsidized loan eligibility limit (SULA) and packages financial aid award or adjusts award accordingly.
    e. Accesses, utilizes and updates information into the Oracle/PeopleSoft, NSLDS and FAA Access.

    3. Assists Assistant Director of Law Financial Aid with Financial Aid Operations
    a. Maintains knowledge of federal financial aid regulations, University and School of Law policies in the areas of Return of Title IV (R2T4), Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), Cost of Attendance, Entrance and Exit Counseling, Consortium Agreements, Transfer Monitoring, and Verification.
    b. Supports Assistant Director of Law Financial Aid in completing the above processes during periods of heavy workload.

    4. Provide admissions and financial aid counseling
    a. Provides admissions counseling to prospective students and advises applicants, entering, and continuing students regarding available sources of financial aid and alternative financing.
    b. Conducts admissions and financial aid workshops.
    c. Supports debt management counseling programs as required by ABA Standards
    d. Represents the School of Law at recruiting events.
    e. Responds to inquiries and updates financial aid information on the website for the School of Law.

    5. Assists in awarding School of Law scholarships
    a. Supports the awarding of scholarships to entering and continuing students, including endowed scholarships.
    b. Assists in monitoring enrollment status of current students to prevent over-awarding of scholarship funds.
    c. Ensures scholarship awards are accurately entered in the University's student information system. Helps coordinate batch scholarship process with University Financial Aid Office with primary responsibility for entering student scholarships.

    6. Reviews admissions and scholarship applications and make recommendations
    a. Reviews applications for admission and makes recommendations on the admissibility of candidates.
    b. Reviews scholarship applications and assists in the selection process for competitive and/or selective scholarships.

    7. Ensure compliance with LSAC, ABA, School of Law, University, and federal financial and best practices, standards, policies, and regulations as appropriate
    a. Monitors updates to federal financial aid policies and regulations and works with other University staff to ensure compliance.
    Regularly meets with University Financial Aid Office staff and attends other financial aid and admissions training sessions as directed by the Assistant Dean for Law Admissions and Financial Aid.

    8. Other duties as assigned.

    Maintains contact with customers and solicits feedback for improved services.
    Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives.
    Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflow.
    Prepares progress reports; informs supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions.
    Prepares and submits reports as requested and required.
    Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the unit.

    Occasionally supervises work of student assistants.

    Working knowledge of federal financial aid regulations and law school admissions practices and procedures.

    Abilities

    Ability to work independently and manage multiple concurrent tasks. Demonstrable proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of products. Ability to travel and work nights and weekends as needed.

    Education and/or Experience

    Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of experience and education plus 0-3 years of related experience required. Experience in admissions and financial aid in a law school or graduate school environment preferred.
