Under the supervision of the Vice President of Financial Aid, the Financial Aid Counselor will play a crucial role in helping students and their families understand and access financial aid resources. This position requires strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, knowledge of financial aid programs and the department of education guidelines, as well as the ability to provide personalized assistance to students.
Responsibilities:
- Provide excellent customer service to students, parents and colleagues.
- Provide personalized financial aid counseling to students and their families.
- Evaluate and verify financial aid documents, including income tax returns and verification worksheets.
- Process payments, refunds, and adjustments accurately and in a timely manner.
- Determine eligibility for federal, state and institutional aid programs.
- Package financial aid awards for eligible students based on established guidelines and available funding.
- Complete verification and process professional judgement requests.
- Process withdrawals and R2T4 calculations.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student financial aid records.
- Enter financial aid data accurately into the student information system.
- Respond to inquiries via phone, email and in-person promptly and professionally and help to resolve any issues/concerns.
- Stay informed about changes to financial aid regulations and policies.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state and institutional rules and regulations.
- Assist with the development and distribution of financial aid related materials.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in a related field preferred
- Knowledge of federal financial aid programs
- Strong mathematical skills with the ability to perform basic financial calculations
- Proficiency in using computer software for data entry and account management
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex financial information
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively
- Excellent customer service and a commitment to helping students succeed
- Positive work ethic and ability to work independently and as a team
