    Job Description
    The Assistant Director will supervise five financial aid counselors who are responsible for a population of approximately 2,500 students receiving some form of financial aid. They will provide training and support to the counselors as they perform needs analysis to determine federal and institutional eligibility and use professional judgement to make appropriate adjustments. The Assistant Director will be expected to ensure the counselors are completing their work efficiently, providing excellent customer service to students and families, as well as maintaining a positive work environment. The Assistant Director will manage Satisfactory Academic Progress for all undergraduate main campus students, including training, escalations, and appeals. They will also manage several scholarship programs as well as appeals for students who lose eligibility for their scholarship. The Assistant Director will also serve as a resource to staff both inside and outside the Financial Aid Office.

    Qualifications
    • Bachelor degree required.
    • Master’s degree preferred.

    Job Specific Qualifications
    • Knowledge of federal and state regulations required.
    • Progressive experience in financial aid including supervising staff required.
    • Microsoft products experience needed, PeopleSoft preferred.
    • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to analyze data for program evaluations.

    Responsibilities
    • Support and train five financial aid counselors. Ensure counselors are aware of financial aid cycle responsibilities and expectations throughout the year. Provide new staff and continuing staff training to ensure staff can effectively and efficiently complete their jobs while staying current with financial aid regulations. Assist counselors with overflow work and student/family escalations.
    • Manage several internal scholarship programs such as, but not limited to Say Yes, Coronat, Scholarship in Action, Junior Achievement, Invest in Success, Remembrance Scholarships, and AmeriCorps. This position also handles all appeals for students who lose eligibility for their merit scholarship.
    • Advise students and parents regarding Syracuse University financial aid awarding, review CSS Profiles and complete Federal verification through the application process. Participate in FAFSA filing events and financial aid information sessions both on and off campus.
    • Provide oversight and day-to-day management of Satisfactory Academic Progress for all undergraduate main campus students, including training, escalations, and appeals. This includes coordinating a SAP appeals committee with members from throughout the university and conducting meetings with the committee weekly.
    • Responsibilities also include reviewing reports to administer aid for the assigned scholarship programs and to ensure compliance maintained should any adjustments occur with student financial aid packages with new information.
