POSITION TITLE: PUBLIC WORKS ASSISTANT (2)
POSITION REPORTS TO: PUBLIC WORKS FOREMAN
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
Works in close cooperation with the Public Works Foreman and other Public Works staff to deliver and maintain City services. Performs a wide variety of duties associated with Public Works to achieve the ultimate goal of providing City services to all area residents in a professional, courteous, and expedient manner. 80% of this position will be related to the collection and disposal of refuse.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under supervision of the Public Works Foreman, this classification performs a multi-purpose role in the delivery and maintenance of City services. Positions assigned to this class may perform any duties as deemed appropriate by the Public Works Foreman.
Maintains City property (i.e., parks and recreational facilities, streets and sidewalks, cemetery, et al.) in a clean and orderly fashion through the collection of waste and debris and placing the same at a designated sanitation collection point; participates in mowing, watering, and trimming of grass, trees, and shrubs on City property; maintains security of City property and equipment and reports any evidence of vandalism or disrepair to the Public Work Foreman.
Participates in work associated with maintenance and repair of paved streets, unpaved roads, street signs, and other auxiliary structures including but not limited to: excavation and back fill of trenches with hand tools or mechanized equipment; loads and unloads trucks with heavy materials, shovels asphalt, cinder, rock, sand, and gravel; spreads and rakes asphalt; clears and patches streets; repairs curbs, sidewalks, and storm sewer openings; builds and maintains culverts (where necessary) and grades unpaved roads; accomplishes snow removal and sanding or salting or cindering on snow covered or icy streets; operates power sweepers, mowers, and other medium-to-heavy vehicles and/or equipment used in grounds maintenance and repair.
Empties residential and commercial trash containers, replaces containers in proper location, and ensures that premises are left in a clean and orderly condition; operates disposal vehicle to compress and dump refuse; as a passenger, observes while vehicle is being backed and warns of potential hazards; cleans and maintains trash collection vehicle; disposes of trash and refuse at proper dump site.
Services water wells and pumps; makes service taps to water mains; repairs leaks in water lines; installs new water lines as needed; clears and cleans sewers by flushing or rodding; maintains sewer facility; performs other duties as deemed appropriate by the Public Works Foreman.
WORK EXPERIENCE AND JOB KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED FOR PUBLIC WORKS ASSISTANT POSITION:
Knowledge of materials, equipment, tools, and techniques of road maintenance; knowledge of safe operation of medium-heavy equipment; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time; ability to operate automotive equipment; ability to follow routine oral and written instruction.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIRED:
Equivalent of a high school education.
Must be able to earn and maintain the following certifications:
*Valid Nebraska operator’s/driver’s license, with ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6 months from the date of hire.
*Grade IV Water Operator’s License
*Grade VI Backflow Prevention License
*NE Dept. of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator’s License (00,09)
NEED TO EXERCISE JUDGMENT AND MAKE DECISIONS:
Work is of moderate difficulty and complexity and is performed under loose supervision. Must exercise individual initiative and independent judgment when the need arises. Ability to handle stressful situations is necessary because of the unpredictable nature of this job.
NEED FOR INTERPERSONAL/HUMAN RELATIONS SKILLS:
Involves matters of ordinary complexity and importance, requiring tact and discretion in maintaining positive working relationships with the general public, coworkers, and local contractors.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:
This position requires some rotating weekend “on-call” shifts, when the employee is required to be within 30 minutes of the Grant community at all times and capable of responding to emergency situations and routine water/sewer system monitoring within a short period of time.
