    Position Summary Information

    Primary Purpose
    The University Senior Financial Analyst is responsible for providing advanced and complex accounting and financial analyses for the University in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Federal and State statutory regulations for all University financial matters. The University Senior Financial Analyst serves as a subject matter expert, providing sound and relevant analysis University-wide and at the unit levels to achieve both tactical and strategic objectives. They are charged with taking the lead on development management/cabinet level reports and will be the person responsible for the other Financial Reporting analysts.
    Essential Functions
    • Regularly lead highly complex accounting assignments that are of diverse scope requiring analysis of identifiable factors using accounting and financial sources, including debt, leases, net assets, trusts, endowments, and investments for both University-wide and unit levels.
    • Develop audit schedules in coordination with the University's external auditors and assist in the preparation of all University financial statements.
    • Prepare tax analysis in coordination with the University's tax counsel and assist in the preparation of the University's tax returns.
    • Responsible for monitoring compliance with internal and external policies.
    • Prepares special external reports to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.
    • Demonstrate independent judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining solutions, completing analysis, and developing recommendations.
    • Lead development of financial reporting dashboards, reports, and visualizations for use by the Board of Regents, President, Cabinet, Deans, and Budget Directors. This requires a deep understanding of the interdependencies of modules and the skill to create formulaic analysis. This effort includes the determination of how to optimally convey information through the creation of charts, tables, summaries, and other presentation materials including dynamic and interactive materials.
    • Interact with senior internal and external contacts on matters of significance to the accounting and compliance of the organization.
    • Work with Budget Directors of the Divisions and Schools to help them understand key accounting policies and standards, as well as a chart of account hierarchical coding, to reflect accurate transactions for all funds (including current, designated, gifts, endowments, projects, etc.) while partnering to improve efficiencies and completeness.
    • Lead assignments where analysis of data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors and multiple sources of accounting and finance-related data such as quarterly financial statements and ratios used by executive management for University planning and decision-making.
    • Determine methods and procedures on new assignments (new tax laws, accounting standards, and compliance requirements).
    • Interpret complex reports and records for administrators and directors.
    • Responsible for coordinating the collection of information, preparing summary schedules, and responding to inquiries from departments of coordinating resolution of issues involving other departments or functions.
    • Oversee the training and cross-training of other analysts, accountants, and interns on day-to-day functions in their areas of responsibility and consult with them when assigned ad hoc projects as to consistent and appropriate methods for data gathering, calculations and presentation in order to provide effective back-up support and guidance as needed.
    • Apply advanced accounting concepts to perform highly complex technical analysis to understand past performance, and determine present and future performance and/or resource allocations.
    • Prepare journal entries and maintain and/or reconcile complex general ledger accounts.
    • Maintain a system of internal controls over financial reporting transactions.
    • Assist in the maintenance of the unit's website and ensure Financial Reporting resource documents are kept current.
    • Stay current with accounting principles, trends, and industry standards for financial reporting and provide recommendations to senior management related to ongoing enhancements of University accounting policies.
    • Perform various tests of new functionality within the different enterprise systems used for financial transactions and make recommendations to improve financial systems.
    • Perform duties of the Financial Reporting Director and Associate Director in their absence.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
    • Seven (7) years of experience in accounting and applying accounting principles.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • MBA or CPA license.
    • Experience in higher education and/or nonprofit organizations desirable.
    • Skills/Knowledge and Expertise:
    • Expert working knowledge of accounting regulations and all federal and state laws pertaining to financial reporting.
    • Extensive experience with various analytic software tools and accounting systems.
    • Advanced skills in MS Excel and other data systems.
    • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills to develop analytical, business reports and metrics including data mining, querying/accessing and summarizing large data sets.
    • Knowledge of college and university accounting or other not-for-profit accounting preferred.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to accuracy and detail.
    • Strong ability to work independently and collaboratively.
    • Demonstrated ability to take primary responsibility for diverse number of tasks and complete them in a timely manner with limited supervision.
    • Demonstrates strong ability in analyzing complex issues and developing solutions and recommendations.
    • Must demonstrate the highest standard for ethics, integrity and confidentiality.
    • Strong communication skills and be able to communicate with all levels of the organization.
    • Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.

    Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment with use of computer, phone and office equipment.     Work Environment/Work Week/Travel
    Work performed in a typical office environment. Duties performed during standard business hours, additional time may be required to meet business needs or deadlines. Occasional travel to distance campuses and required meetings and/or trainings.
    Hiring Range $84,137.02 - $115,679.96 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
