FIRE CAPTAIN manages a team of firefighters. Ensures all equipment is properly maintained and serviced. Being a FIRE CAPTAIN directs training and conditioning activities. Administers the staff work schedule to ensure adequate coverage. Additionally, FIRE CAPTAIN leads and coordinates responses to fire events, hazardous material incidents, auto accidents, and search and rescue operations. Prepares post-incident reports as required. Leads or coordinates fire safety education and inspection activities. Typically is required to pass periodic physical ability tests. May require registry in NREMT. Typically requires an associate degree in fire science. Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a manager. The FIRE CAPTAIN manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a FIRE CAPTAIN typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Fire watch personnel provide surveillance of areas where “hot work”, such as welding or cutting with torches, is occurring. Fire watch personnel are the people who are responsible for aiding and protecting these resources and the people that work with them.

    Duties
    While a fire watch employees' primary duty is to sound the alarm if any incidents occur and wait for the proper authorities, other aspects of their work rely heavily on whether they're working on a construction site. Here's a list of the responsibilities they may have on the job:

    • Have an understanding of safety procedures and how to implement them
    • Survey the workspace for any potential risks before, during and after the workday
    • Remain vigilant on-site whenever employees are doing  hot work
    • Keep a record of any risks and solutions
    • Contact and inform emergency personnel as soon as any issues arise
    • Report and map any signs of smoke
    • Clean and repair fire extinguisher when necessary
    • Make sure that all equipment is operational
    • Clean up any litter and other waste when spotted on the ground
    • Investigate small smoke trails
    • Constantly patrolling areas where “hot work” is being performed, maintaining vigilance of potential fires.
    • Having fire-extinguishing equipment readily available and being well-trained in its use.
    • Maintaining the conditions and requirements stated on the safety permit.
    • Inspecting the entire work area to look for potential release of flammable vapors or liquids before, during, and at the end of each shift.
    • Being prepared to operate fire extinguishers, hydrants, fixed monitors, and hose carts anytime.
    • Never leaving the job site while the work is being done.
     

    Skills and Requirements

    • GED or HS Diploma
    • Experience on a construction site
    • Good Vision
    • Clear and Effective Communication 
    • Prior experience with Safety Equipment
    • Understanding of Basic Safety

    The Fire Watch position is needed for 6 or more months, once this position is not required any longer, employees may transition to  construction laborers which entails

    • Preparing construction sites, materials, and tools.
    • Loading and unloading of materials, tools, and equipment.
    • Removing debris, garbage, and dangerous materials from sites.
    • Assembling and breaking down barricades, temporary structures, and scaffolding.
    • Assisting contractors, e.g. electricians and painters, as required.
    • Assisting with transport and operation of heavy machinery and equipment.
    • Regulating traffic and erecting traffic signs.
    • Following all health and safety regulations.
    • Digging holes, tunnels, and shafts.
